My Dallas Morning News colleague Mark Davis and i have dueling columns in today's paper. Mark thinks Rush Limbaugh's speech was right on target, but I think otherwise.
Predictably, I'm getting a lot of harsh reaction from The Base. I'll post my favorite letter, from someone who surely has gotten hold of poor Richard Roth's e-mail account without his knowledge, after the jump, to avoid causing offense to folks who would rather not see this sort of thing, even in a bowdlerized form.
Writes the person from that address:
Howdy - you Obama lovin jackass!! Only a good liberal journalism prick like you could write that piece of [delteted] & think you are advancing the good old USA. I had to sit next to the "bearded elitists" in journalism school at the University of Minn. Corduroy jackets - pipes of course - and an "I'm smarter than you" chip on their shoulder that made you want to kick their [deleted] [deleted]!!!!! I can see from your photo you have a face full of hair. Grow it yourself? Saw a PHD with a beard 20 years ago & fell in love? Hey, look mommy - I grew a beard!! Where's your 20 million listeners? How come you don't run for office if you're so smart? Oh, I see. It's really comfy sitting on your [deleted] - in the nice warm DMN building - running your mouth about the world & conservatives in general. Oh, I'm sorry - did I recently see where the DMN is losing its [deleted]!!! Must be the fabulous collection of buttheads that the public is just itching to read & learn from. As a Rush conservative I will gladly "COUNT YOU OUT". Your article just screams your background - never took a risk - never met a payroll - never built a successful anything. Pal, you are a [deleted] pathetic joke. Please just sit down and "SHUT THE [deleted] UP"!!!!! Oh, And have a nice day.
Clearly, Mr. Roth has a rich inner life, as well as trouble growing facial hair.

There are elements of the truth in both the neo-con and paleo-con wings, and much to learn from both the libertarian and traditionalist (Burkean) streams of conservative thought.
If you believe "man is born free but everywhere he is in chains," then you cannot also believe in original sin. This used to be the fundamental difference between liberalism and conservatism, but now that we're in "both/and" land conservatives simply adopted the liberal assumption.
America is now offered the following "culture war" choices: Lust, envy and sloth vs. greed, pride and wrath.
You'd have those who are against the former make common cause with those who are for the latter. I cannot.
Buckley famously said of conservatism It stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.
I'd replace the word "Stop" with "Virtue," and clearly no-one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those of us who so urge.
steve s.: "GOP presidential candidates have attracted less and less of the popular vote since [1972]. I made a graph [link]...Down, down, down."
The points on the graph, which show Reagan '84 with easily the highest GOP vote percents in the nine elections since 1972, resemble a constellation: The Big Gipper.
"when was the last time the GOP nominated the candidate the base wanted? 1984?"
2004? What "basier" figure even dared run against Our Bulging Wartime Leader, Mr. Mission Accomplished?

...is not me btw.
The More Urbane Max By Far:
I may echo more than myself in having never suspected you for a second of so dropping either your sur-nom de plume or your customary displays of superior breeding - though I must admit to having enjoyed the guilty pleasure denoted by your S-word of Damn-ocles in witnessing the ill temper unwittily revealed by another, who had to leave, rumor has it, when he heard the refrigerator magnet hit the floor and threaten the loss of his prize comments from last week...
"Well ....
... it's stunning to read your comments and fully recognize how many comboxers here at "crunchy con" enjoy resorting to name-calling as a substitute for a reasoned examination of the facts."
Not to belabor the point, Reaganite in NYC, but your retreat to whining instead of addressing the REASONS I used those terms is pretty much exactly what I mean by brain-dead.
The facts are that this whole Rush thing has been a product of the GOP and conservatism. Have Obama and the Dems enjoyed it and egged it on? Sure, but any distraction has been created and sustained by Rush and the rest of the Right.
