Hey folks, if you live in or visit the Colorado Springs area, where I'm wrapping up my stay, make the short drive to Manitou Springs to eat at Adam's Mountain Cafe. It's a bona fide Slow Food restaurant, and the food is some of the best I've had anywhere. I went to dinner there the other night, and had a Senegalese vegetable dish, with a peanut sauce. Tonight, after taking the cog rail journey up and down Pikes Peak -- avoid the greasy donuts at the cafe on top -- I stopped by for a second meal, and ate a terrific Thai salad, and a bowl of seafood chowder (yes, here in landlocked Colorado) that was literally the best I've ever had (I repeat: yes, here in landlocked Colorado). I was excited to see too that they are members of Slow Food USA.
I don't often write here about good meals I've had, but really, Adam's Mountain Cafe is an exceptional place. Highly recommended by me. And if you head out to Manitou Springs from Colorado Springs on Hwy 24, you'll pass right by the Orthodox-run Agia Sophia Coffee Shop, which is definitely worth a stop.

Best seafood chowder I ever had was at a rundown joint in Nova Scotia, Joe's (?) I think. Lots of lobster and real fish. Broken lights, holes in the ceiling, but that chowder was wonderful.

That's quite a recommendation. I'll make a point of stopping by next time I'm down that way.
I second the recommendation! Ended up in Manitou Springs, Colorado, on a quick sightseeing drive into the mountains during a Colorado Springs business trip last week (Aug 13 2009). Stopped at Adams Mountain Cafe late evening. Had never heard of it. BUT WHAT a MEAL. Senegalese Vege dish w/ added shrimp, paired with garden salad w/ ginger dressing --- if you go to one restaurant in the Colo Springs area (easy drive from downtown Colo Springs, say, under 30 minutes), make it this one. Great little town to walk around, too.
