I posted this eons ago, back at my old blog site, but it seems a good time to revisit this classic from My Close Personal Friend (MCPF) Stephen Colbert.

Happy Feast of Christ the King, y'all.

Greg ...

I remember what a friend wrote to me many months back, when I first posted this video: "There you have everything that's wrong with modern liturgy in 45 seconds."

THAT is what Colbert is mocking here. Bless his snarky little heart :-)

Dcn. Greg,

Great minds think alike! I just posted the same link on my blog!

Interestingly enough, both the opening and closing hymns at mass this morning at the mass with a contemporary choir were oldies but goodies ("Lift High the Cross" and "Crown Him With Many Crowns").

We had two baptisms this morning, which made the second verse of the opening hymn all the more poignant:

"Each newborn servant of the Crucified
Bears on the brow the seal of Him Who died."

Deacon Gregg,

When you look at it in that light, it's easier to take.  However, if you think this display contains everything that's wrong with the modern liturgy (and I don't believe you do) then you're more than a little off.  That would be hard enough to pull off in a 45 minute sattire ;-)

Blessings

Colbert isn't being irreverent, he's just ( I believe ) poking some good - natured fun at the pomp & seriousness of a lot of standard religion.

Ever been to a Lutheran service ? Most of them seem like the spontaneity & joy have been drained right OUT.

Oh, & remember that a certain Old Testament king danced for Joy NAKED before the Ark of the Covenant.

I'd bet even money that some would've found that sacrilegious ack in the day.....
