Going through old boxes, I stumbled on a 33 rpm recording of this TV special from way-back-when: “Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.” I have fond memories of hearing it on my parents’ big boxy wooden stereo in our living room when I was growing up. I decided to dig around and, lo and behold, found several samplings from it on YouTube.
Remember when two gifted young people could sit in front of a microphone for 10 minutes and just, you know, sing? Maybe more amazing: this special was produced in 1962, before either of these gals had made a big splash in TV or the movies; they were known for their work on Broadway — a relatively small niche. But CBS thought enough of these two to give them an hour of prime time to sing at Carnegie Hall. Would anyone at the broadcast networks attempt anything like this today? I doubt it.
Take a few moments and enjoy this treasure from a time capsule. Nearly 50 years after it first aired, it’s still just great.

I sure do remember when movies had meaning and they had actor and actresses who told a story with their faces and actions. Now it’s so typical and there no mystery or inspirational messages. Only on very few programs. That is why we watch the old television show’s. They had talent and they didn’t have to use sex and women’s bodies to make money like they do now on most of the movies. Violence and sex doesn’t sell, it’s old and it’s been done. That is why alot of the time they are trying to do remake’s of old tv programs or using British TV and copy the show’s and redo them for America. We need new TV executives and progamming people, but we probably won’t get them, they think they are doing us a justice by wasting our time on the same old show’s?

Thanks so much for this. Indeed, it reminded me of watching that program and how we would all watch TV together – Mom and Dad, teen-agers and youngsters (if we had done our homework first!) all able to enjoy the same show. O tempora! O mores!

Such memories from watching this – *sigh* – tv was a family event in those days, not done on a phone or ipod or on one of 7 tv’s in a house.
We are odd by contemporary standards in that we have only 2 – one in our family room and one in our child’s room. The funny thing is that she rarely uses it! We actually do tend to all sit in the family room together. It is not always peaceful as we decide what to watch but we do have a lot of fun and learn that old fashioned thing called flexibility.
