Baptist church pamphlet mocks eucharist as “death cookie”

posted by jmcgee | 6:36pm Thursday March 4, 2010

Some disturbing news out of Tennessee:

Two Baptist church pamphlets are causing controversy with a Roman Catholic church in Pigeon Forge.

12079162_BG1.jpgThe pamphlet suggests the Roman Catholic church isn’t Christian and the pope is an anti-Christ.

While some people say the pamphlet expresses religious freedom, others say it’s a hate crime.

Father Jay Flaherty, of Holy Cross Catholic Church, said he first learned about the pamphlets when one of his youth brought one to him.

“There’s two of them that really upset me because I knew it would upset the children,” Father Flaherty said. “One’s called the ‘Death Cookie,’ which claims that our communion is from the devil.”

The other pamphlet, titled “Last Rites,” shows cartoon drawings of a Roman Catholic man who isn’t saved because he didn’t accept Christ.

The pamphlets have been passed out before, but Father Flaherty says this is the first time a church’s name has been printed on them.

The church is Conner Heights Baptist Church, located on Conner Heights Road.

Preacher Jonathan Hatcher says the pamphlets are meant to help spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“This is an isolated event where just one believer had an obligation to share with a Catholic friend, in a difference of what we believe,” Pastor Hatcher said.

Father Flaherty feels differently. “I don’t want another Columbine at Pigeon Forge High School. I can see by this stuff that some people who aren’t straight in the head believing it and persecuting the Catholic kids,” he said.

You can read more about this at the link.

These pamphlets are from Chick Publications (http://www.chick.com/default.asp) and have been around for years. If it weren’t for the fact that so many people actually believe them, they would be laughable.

I was raised Southern Baptist, and this gives Baptists a bad name. While I don’t agree with the majority of Catholic beliefs, to say hateful things like this is uncalled for. As Christians, we both worship Jesus as Lord. We need to find common ground so that He won’t be disgraced by actions such as these.

This is pure hate and intolerance towards another Christian faith. It is disgusting, and definately not spreading any gospel that I’m aware of. Apparently people who believe this way, have made up their own verses and printed their own Bible. This pamphlet, and other hateful language proves it.

I’m sorry. The question is, is it Biblical? Is there salvation in it? What was the inquisition about in Spain? Is doctrine important–or just “love?” Where is the “love” for Christ’s accomplishment on the cross?

First off, there is no crime, so it can’t be a “hate crime.” Second, no one should take Jack Chick too serious, even non-Catholics (such as myself) see him as a bit off.
It is tough to find that balance between being too soft and failing to spread the truth, and being unloving. Being too soft can cause people to not take it serious, and being harsh makes people ignore you outright. Jack Chick means well, as do many of the churches uses his tracts, but he is completely blind to the effects of his methods.

Do we worship the same “Christ?” The Bible says no, that there are many false Christs We are supposed to study and show ourselves approved of God. Worshiping a false Christ is death because we show no repect to the Bible, the Word, which Christ, Himself, held even higher than His own Name!

Father Jay Flaherty is a very interesting character. A couple summers back, we ended up stranded in the awful tourist trap that is Pigeon Forge, and we decided to go to mass at his parish–expecting, at best, a quick way to keep our Sunday obligation. Instead, the mass was a beautiful worship experience, and Fr. Jay’s homily was very moving and memorable. When we discovered that the gift shop had copies of his homilies available on CD, we bought one to play during our trip. Jack Chick is no match for Father Flaherty!

Is there salvation in the Catholic Church? Is it OK to mix works and grace for salvation? Romans 11:6 “And if by grace, then it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”
Do you care about your brother?
Is it “love” to ignore the Scriptures in favor of “love” for your brother?
What about “love” for God, Who is the “Author and Finisher of our Faith?”

Oh great, more Jack Chick Tracts. And I can’t believe Baptists even believe in this kind of bogus. I’ve debated with Baptists and I can’t believe they would even use this kind of stuff in their “apologetics.” If they want to know what the Catholic Church truly teaches, they need to get right to the source….catholic.com is a good one. But no…they won’t..they keep debating you with another question instead of sticking to one question. Gets tiring and pretty pathetic, if you ask me. The Early Church Fathers were Catholic, who wrote about the true body and blood of Christ. St. Paul the Apostle in 1 Corinthians 11:28-29 “he who eats the bread and drinks the cup without discerning the body and blood of Christ eats and drinks judgment upon himself.”

Ahhh. . .good ol’ Chick Publications!
When I taught High School religion, I used to hand them out as an assignment. The students had to respond to the pamphlet. It was a real eye-opener for the students, who where always shocked that people could be so anti-Catholic.
I look at Chick Publications as a sign of their overall insecurities with Catholicism. They FEAR the truths of Catholicism, and use these pamphlets to convince weak Catholics to leave the Church. They are successful, sad-to-say!

Original Chick Tract.  Knowing that St.’s Polycarp, Ignatius of Antioch, and Justin Martyr all preached on the Real Presence, the Devil apparently corrupted the Church Fathers in the early going, didn’t he? (2+ Centuries B4 the official Canon of the Bible was compiled, according to my calculations); yet somehow they call themselves “Bible Christians”; rather amazing how God’s Word stemmed from such a “corrupt” organization, proving yet again that imbiciles (like Chick & Conner Heights Baptist Church) don’t grow on trees.

I can’t believe people are acting like these tracts are new. Chick tracts have been around for decades. And I can’t believe it’s coming to this. Hate crimes? Please. It’s a shame the Baptist pastor chose to remain ignorant about both Catholicism and the tracts he gives out. It certainly doesn’t help matters. The tracts are published by Chick tracts (Jack Chick), and they are based on sound Biblical doctrine and an in-depth understanding of Catholicism. I was raised Catholic. My grandmother was almost a nun. Her sister WAS a nun for a number of years. Her brother was a Jesuit brother. Her other brother and sister-in-law are Catholic missionaries/teachers. So suffice it to say that when I ACTUALLY STARTED READING THE BIBLE FOR MYSELF and found that what the Catholic church teaches is just simply WRONG on many things, my family did not take it well. Also suffice it to say that I had a very good grasp on what the Catholic church teaches. So I can tell you from experience with both (Catholicism and reading Chick tracts), that the tracts in question are TOTALLY accurate, DO NOT accuse Catholics of worshiping Satan (not conscientiously, anyway), and are NOT hateful. The purpose of the tracts (as is the case in ALL of Chick’s tracts) is to win sinners (in this case Catholics) to the Christ of the Bible, whom they have all been taught that they already worship. If it were simply to tell them they were all going to hell and laugh at that, that would be one thing. To try to save their souls from a false doctrine? That’s anything but hateful. The priest in this article is the one who is ignorant.

The Catholic Church (the Universal Church) is the One True Church founded by Jesus Christ and carried on by the Apostles and their successors.
Sorry to all who think otherwise, but the Church is the Church and is holy and Christ is present in it. All others, while they may have a seed or truth, or even a big chunk of the truth (such as our Orthodox brethren), are living in error.
The Church has withstood centuries despite attacks from outside and inside and it will be here when the Lord comes back. Protestant sects are heresies developed after the 16th century and while we can look at them with the affection of those who grope in the dark while the light is right there, we can’t accept them as true.
If you read the bible by yourself, fine, but that does not make you supreme ruler of the universe and maker of you own rules. It does not matter what you believe or not, the Church is the ONE TRUE CHURCH. Period.
As for Cheek Publications, they are deluded by the same devil they so much use in their trashy pamphlets. They are truly evil in a sense and completely ignorant of true doctrine. Those who believe what the infantile tracts say live in a complete ignorance and their brains are surely dried out.

Momof5BRLA, I think if you actually read the bible you would understand where Catholic teaching comes from. And if you are going to talk about finding the Jesus of the Bible, I am sure you realize that Jesus was a Jew, and was preaching to Jews, and lived with Jews. Not Catholics, not Baptists, not other Protestants. If you are reading from the Bible and coming up with anything other than Catholic, then you are really taking the Gospel out of its place in history. The Catholic Church was the first fully formed Church after Christ’s ascension. It assembled the Canon of Scripture. So the Book that tells you the Catholic Church is wrong was put together by the Church. Who do you think is wrong? The person who reads the book or the person who assembled it? Think about that one.

You cannot committ a hate crime against the Catholic Church in Tennesee or elsewhere in this country…it’s the last” acceptable

I use to read these tracts when I was younger. I thought as much for many years when I was an Evangelical Protestant. I have since studied the writings of the Fathers, the men who were trained by the apostles long before Justin and there you will find the Catholic Church. through actually reading the whole bible, and some books such as Scott Hahn ‘The Lambs Supper’ and ‘A Father Who Keeps His Promises’,'The Everlasting Man’ by Chesterton, I have slowly come to know what the Church actually is and became a Catholic. In the Old Testament, God kept his family through Covenants with him, the Church is the New and Everlasting Covenant. It is the family of God. “The Death Cookie” is Really the “Bread of Life” once you read the WHOLE Bible, not just selected parts. I fear it will be Mr. Chick and many Modernistic, Quasi Christians who may see some of the Demons that Mr. Chick loves to draw…

Your name, you asked: Where is the “love” for Christ’s accomplishment on the cross?
The simple answer: In the EUCHARIST!
=======
Momof5: Being that the Bible came FROM the Catholic Church (often unknown to many Protestants due to Satan worshipers like Jack Chick of “Chick Tracks”), it would be impossible to declare it “incorrect” as it would have to mean that Christ was not Christ. You might be best to study REAL biblical history. Furthermore, your “Protestant Bible didn’t even come about until the printing press in the 1500′s. By that logic alone, even if ingorant of early Christian History, it would make the WORD, i.e., Sacred Tradition, including the apostles, frauds. You and many might be shocked to learn that the bible actually came not only FROM the Catholics, but from the Catholic Mass, (yes, the one with the Eucharist), and even that wasn’t until 400 years after the death of Christ.
===================
Paul, I miss the “old bench” too; convinced this is well needed penance, at least for me. I know the old bench was too good to be true, or at least last.

Christians are called to come together in the unity of our faith in Jesus Christ, not in the unity of our doctrine. If we come together in love, the God who is big enough raise us to eternal life from the grave is also big enough to sort out all our wrong doctrine, Catholic and Protestant alike. The Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ, and as such, we shouldn’t be surprised that it is such a divisive point. It was Simeon who prophesied that Christ would be a sign that would be contradicted, so that the thoughts of many souls may be revealed. We see that a multitude of people abandoned Christ when he taught the Bread of Life discourse, and balked at his teaching that only when they eat his flesh and drink his blood will they have life. Why should it be any different today?
It isn’t surprising that they would think that the greatest miracle of the Eucharist is the devil’s work. For those who think that darkness is light, and light darkness, why shouldn’t they be so deficient of faith and intellect as to declare the very substance of God to be Satanic?
The final end of all heresies is the rejection of God and his Divine Plan, the repetition of Lucifer’s fall of pride. We’re seeing the fruits of such rebellion here.

Praise be to God and then our courageous priest Father Jay Flaherty and our noble Bishop Richard F. Stika for addressing this. Unfortunately this sort of thing happens to Catholics in this part of the country more than we care to admit. We’re fortunate this was brought to light and that our Catholic leaders were so well versed and loving as they handled this situation.
Does it not mean to be Christ-like when carrying the title of Christian? As we all should know who follow Him, Christ is love. I am not at all surprised that our Catholic leaders handled this with love. I, for one, will continue to pray for the strength and grace of our clergy and membership, here. It’s not an easy discipline to combat hate with love but how beautiful it is when it happens. What a wonderful example to follow.

Sorry, but lying is a sin. It is evil. Wrong. Not something Christians should do. And that pamphlet is full of lies.
A pastor who can speak of a sin as an isolated event is not fit to be a pastor. Newman blew that excuse out of the water in a sermon he preached in 1847. Sin is serious;, it’s attempted Deicide.
And it is *not* “isolated” – our acts & omissions have consequences; they can have them for centuries into the future, on millions of people & hundreds of generations. If St. Gregory the Great had not met some English children, St. Augustine might never have been sent to England in 597. The latest sin we commit, may be tiny in itself – yet it may damn us for ever.
God help U.S. Protestantism, if that pastor’s outlook is at all widespread.
