Catholic actor who quit over sex scenes may play a priest

posted by jmcgee | 10:52pm Saturday August 14, 2010

His story made headlines some months back — and if reports are accurate, he may have an interesting project lined up:

Neal-mcdonough.jpgYou may not know the name Neal McDonough — but he’s one of those Hollywood faces you’ll instantly recognize. He’s a compelling actor, who’s played good guys and bad, most recently on the ABC series “Desperate Housewives” and HBO’s “Band of Brothers.”

But last season, McDonough reportedly walked away from a starring role on another ABC show called “Scoundrels,” when producers wanted him to do sex scenes. McDonough is married with a family, is a strong Catholic — and reportedly has always made it clear that he would not do heated love scenes. (On the steamy “Housewives” primetime soap, his character was creepy and disturbing, sometimes shirtless — but not part of the sexual game-playing that often drives the show.)

When McDonough’s stand was reported earlier this year on the entertainment industry news site “Deadline Hollywood,” reader reaction was swift and overwhelmingly positive — but many commentators worried McDonough would become a Hollywood outcast.

But today “Deadline Hollywood” reports McDonough has landed a new project — he will write, produce and star in a series called “Vigilante Priest” for the cable channel Starz. He’ll play an ex-cop turned priest who cleans up the streets of Los Angeles “one sinner at a time.”

Meet Montana's married priest
Earlier this week, I posted an item about Montana getting its first married priest. Now a local TV station has hopped on the bandwagon. Take a look, below.

Big day in the Big Easy: 10 new deacons
Deacon Mike Talbot has the scoop: 10 men today were ordained as Permanent Deacons for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This group of men was formally selected on the day the evacuation of New Orleans began as Hurricane Katrina approached. The immediate aftermath of the storm for this class would be

"Gesu Bambino," anyone? This is one of my favorites, and nobody does it better than these gals: Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Staade. Enjoy.

I commend McDonough for refusing to do the hardcore stuff. Catholic or not, I have never been comfortable with many of today’s films and TV shows that go… all… the… way! Glad someone in Hollywood has taken a stand against smut.
Cheers,
Dan N.

But his doing sex scenes as an actor shouldn’t be a problem. Sexuality is a natural part of human experience, and art should be completely free to explore that experience, no holds barred, or it isn’t art. Which is, or should be, the problem: these tv shows aren’t art; they simply exploit our prurience for the sake of making money. If it’s immoral to represent immorality in art, then what about Dante? And if an actor is not willing to explore all human experience as an actor in a drama, I would tend to think that he or she is an incompetent actor.

Jim,
So if an actor is not willing to urinate and crap onscreen he is not a competent actor? It’s a natural part of the human experience. God intended sexuality as both a unitive and procreative between spouses and not as a public act that can cause others to sin. Sin is in the will which is why someone can commit adultery without actually having sex with another person while married. Most Hollywood sex scenes rarely advance the plot in any significant way and do not make the storytelling any better. You can certainly show people falling in love without them having sex onscreen. I find your definition of art rather odd since beauty is not in it. It sounds more like license than anything.

I didn’t offer a definition of art, Jeff, and if we can’t talk without just trying to insult one another and deliberately misread and misstate one another’s viewpoints, we should probably not talk, since we’re obviously not trying to understand one another. My mistake for posting my first post, I’m afraid. My apologies to the Deacon.

Jim you are a fool. Your words clearly say that you define what art is, and if others don’t agree well then “they” don’t know art.

Are you serious here? Are you kidding? That hs to be one of the most bizarre statements I have seen here.

Way to go Mr. Mcdonough.Does not the “lead us not into temptation” phrase mean anything? Why is it so many that co-star in a movie, engage in the steamy scenes, then end up divorcing their spouses shortly following the completion of the movie? Neal you are living your faith and are to be commended by all good Christians for your exemplary character!

Am I the only one who noticed the plot of the new show? A retired cop-turned-priest who’s “cleaning up the streets of LA one sinner at a time”?
How awesome is that! How many young men will watch this and become attracted to the priesthood by the glamorous portrayal of it as a crusade against evil? I can answer that with another question: How many police officers and detectives became what they are because of watching cop shows and detective shows growing up?
While the reality of the priesthood will be what these young men ultimately fall in love with, they will be brought to the seminaries by the promise of high speed chases, tense interrogations, adventures, harrowing escapes, … Heck, it makes me want to be a priest and I’m married!
Anything that paints a priest as a hero, even a super hero, in the modern context, done tastefully, is a good idea in my book.

All actors have a choice in the rolls they take. “Love scenes” can be played with taste or totally without taste. Personally, I find Mc Donough very good looking and I’d watch him walk a dog if that is what the script called for! :o )

I am so excited to hear this. I have always loved your acting, Mr. McDonough, and there are almost no actors in this country who are faithful to God. I am so proud of you, sir, and I pray that God blesses your efforts in Hollywood. It will truly be a battle, but with God on your side, I’m sure it can be done. I, frankly, don’t understand why Hollywood has stooped so low. I can hardly take my kids to see a movie these days due to all the bad language–even in PG-13 movies. As far as the sex, I don’t know why they have to be so graphic. They know that people have built up a tolerance to the level of violence in movies, so they’ve had to make them more and more violent in order to get a reaction.
The same goes for sex. I mean one can only get so naked, and after a couple times the mystery is gone. Where do they go from there to get a reaction? Porn seems to be the only other avenue This has affected the whole moral fiber of our country. People are so in love with that rush of hormones, That they have to change partners every time that rush goes away.
Anyway, please let the Christian community know what projects you are doing, so we can support you. God Bless You and Your family.
