UPDATE: A couple of commenters have now pointed me to the lovely video below, this girl’s audition, which is her rendition of — believe it or not — “Panis Angelicus.” All I can say is (again) WOW.

What a polished voice for a little girl! Her vowel shapes and resonance are terrific. The lower jaw is relaxed and she has an excellent concept of vocal sound. She’s the real deal.

The Youtube audition that Jackie sent in was her solo of “Panis Angelicus.” The words of this hymn, authored by St. Thomas Aquinas in 1274, celebrates the Eucharist. The first line, by one translation, runs thus: “Bread of Angels, made the Bread of men.”
How wonderful that this little angel Jackie impressed the screeners with her celebrating “The Bread of Angels.”

As long as her talent is handled properly (she is still growing, and her voice no doubt will change in adolescence, maybe drastically) as well as a solid well-grounded upbringing, she can have decades of success. And even if she does lose this unique gift through physical maturity, hopefully she can look with happiness back at the time she caught lightning in a bottle, and not with bitterness that it was only for a short time. Looking upon the current crop of child stars, the successful and truly happy soul is the exception rather than the rule.

In our culture of “ten minutes of fame” it is wonderful to take a moment to forget the bubble boy and the nutty flight attendant and celebrate a lovely, innocent and delightful child. I wish her well. May the Lord (and her parents) keep her protected from the challenges of stardom!
