The Deacon's Bench

A patron saint of sex abuse victims?

That would be the soon-to-be saint Mary MacKillop — who evidently was (briefly) excommunicated as revenge for seeking to have a priest pedophile brought to justice.

Fr. James Martin has details:

the astonishing story of Blessed Mary MacKillop, an Australian sister and foundress of a women’s religious order, who will be canonized on Oct. 17, says a great deal about sanctity, about sin, about women in the church and, finally, about hope.

The saga of Mother Mary MacKillop’s excommunication was thought to be well documented in church history books, and widely acknowledged as an almost unprecedented stop on her circuitous path to sainthood. After all, very few saints have been excommunicated–the church’s harshest penalty, which denies reception of any sacraments. But in 1870 Laurence Sheil, the bishop of Brisbane, formally ejected her from the church. Until recently, the story of MacKillop’s punishment was understood mainly as the result of a conflict between her and the bishop, who cited insubordination as the official reason for this extraordinary move against the foundress of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

But the full story is that Mary MacKillop was excommunicated out of “revenge,” in the words of one priest familiar with her life, for uncovering a case of sex abuse by a Father Keating, in a nearby parish. Paul Gardiner, S.J., the former postulator of MacKillop’s canonization process, told an Australian television documentary a few days ago, “Priests being annoyed that somebody had uncovered it–that would probably be the way of describing it–and being so angry that the destruction of the Josephites was decided on.” A statement from the Sisters of St. Joseph has confirmed that the documentary’s reports are “consistent with” studies of the event.

There’s much more, including the lessons to be learned from Blessed Mary MacKillop’s life, at the America link.

Blessed Mary MacKillop and others who found religious congregations/orders have special graces.
May she be an inspiration to others.

Mary MacKillop was a real heroin. She should have stayed excommunicated. She is a saint whether the Catholic church cannonises her or not. The real meaning of ‘saint’ is a true follower of Christ. There are many saints that have nothing to do with the Catholic Church. How anyone can believe that is a church of God is beyond me. The sins they have committed are more in line with the devil than God. Nevertheless there have been some wonderful nuns and priests that have true love of God in their hearts. They do not need us. God will reward them way beyond any earthly honour. We should not pray to anyone other than God Himself in the name of His son, Jesus Christ who atoned for our sins and made it possible for us to return to our Father in Heaven. Not only those who have lived since He came but all who have ever been born on earth. God bless.

Antoinette,
If her members were perfect, there would be no need for the Catholic Church. The Church is a hospital for sinners, not a hotel for saints. The fact that the Church has survived for 2000 years despite the sins, even horrendous sins, of her people – lay, religious, priests, bishops and even popes – is a testament to the fidelity of Jesus and reliability of His promises: “on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
As to praying to the saints, why shouldn’t we? The word “pray” means “ask.” We are clearly commanded to worship God alone, but nowhere in scripture or tradition are we commanded to ask God alone. If you have ever asked someone to pray for you, then you are doing no different than Catholics who properly pray to the saints. To pray to the saints means to ask them to pray for and with us. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ and thanks to the Grace won by Jesus’ sacrifice, they have eternal life and are not truly dead. They remain a part of the Body of Christ.

WineintheWater, TOO much wine !! prayers for the dead ? false GOSPEL of works ? : you participate in your salvation by your good works? idols, relics, forced celibacy ? twisted sacrament of the MASS ? : JESUS sacrficed over again & again ? false forgiveness in the confessional ? enough already !!

Jim,
Read the gospel of James. The only time that “faith alone” is ever used in the bible is to say that it’s not enough.
Are you actually saying that the souls of the deceased are truly “dead”, as in non-existent? Book of Revelation: the saints are alive, in heaven and offer up prayers to God. Not worship, but prayers, as in they’re asking him for something, namely intentions for us.
Book of Hebrews – we’re surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, namely the saints who see us, hear us and testify for us.
Can you show me in the Bible where it says that Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, etc. is to be the taken as scripture?
If the Bible alone is our guide, then weren’t the first Christians lost, as the Bible as we know it didn’t exist?
Do you think that God would give salvation only to the literate?
The full meaning of the incarnation is that God became man and tays with man in the form of the Church, namely us, in the flesh. Not in a book, but with us.

Everyone can use as much help as one can get. Blessed Mary MacKillop seems to have ruffled the feathers of the powers that were when she went after a child abusing priest. She was ahead of her time. GOOD! What I still don’t understand is the reluctance of the Catholic church to allow women to be priests, even though it has been explained so many times. Women are assets in the religious community (as proven by the many woman saints)so why can’t they compliment the church as priests?

Pagansis writes “What I still don’t understand is the reluctance of the Catholic church to allow women to be priests, even though it has been explained so many times.”
OK, one more time for the road. The priesthood is rooted in the Abrahamic and Mosaic priethood of the Father (male) sacrifice of the Son (male). Abraham (male) and Issac (male), then the Passover where the MALE lamb or goat was substituted and blood put on the doors to ward away the destroying angel.
Jesus (male) was both priet (male) and victim (male)the the establisment of the Eucharist and the Apostles (male).
It is not about social justice, gender equality, fairness, or anything like that. These issues have their own reality, but the issue here is iconic or cultic which has something of a cosmic quality.
That part of the trunk is set, it is a “guy” administered thing. If there is to be a “gal” administed thing it would have to be something else. And maybe that is what is needed, new Christian rites or practices that are gal administered.
Carl Jung wrote that the most important psychic related event of the 20th Century was the promulgation of the Dogma of the Assumption by Pope Pius XII in 1950. It was the laypeople who wanted it the most. It is actually growth of a new branch of the Christian story. And Jung said that such stories must grow or die, so he concludes that Catholicism lives and will live because its story grows. Something will develop out of this, but God has to build the house.

MarkF,
” Sanctify them by the truth oh GOD, make them holy , set them apart from sin unto yourself and do it by your truth. THY WORD IS TRUTH.
His WORD is sufficient !. Some ” cults ” say you need the Word of GOD plus the edits of the church. It is not scripture plus the teachings of the rcc. ONCE AGAIN , HIS WORD IS SUFFICIENT !!
HEBREWS : GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES – they are not sitting in the grandstands watching. They are testifying that the blessed life is the life of faith , and you ought to learn from their testimony.
The BIBLE is complete, infallible and inerrant!! TASTE AND SEE THAT IT IS GOOD.You don’t need anything else !!

“The BIBLE is complete, infallible and inerrant!!”
There were many things that Jesus said and did that are NOT in the Bible. I think the Bible itself tells us that quite clearly. So in that sense it does not tell the complete story but enough for our salvation. I am sure you are aware of how untenable the “Sola Scriptura” theory is. If not, google it.
There are many things that are not in the Bible that were passed down orally–that’s where we get tradition.
Oh and just where do you think the Bible came from? Was it dropped down from heaven?

RomCath,
read 2tim ; 16,17. the BIBLE is the greatest treasure apart from GOD himself. hebrews 1:2 – GOD spoke on ( 2 ) occassions. long ago and HE speaks in these last days by his SON. the Gospels record GOD speaking thru his Son.
RomCath, when you pick up your BIBLE, your not reading the word of men, your reading the Word of God writen by men who were moved along in the process by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT.
ALL scripture is ” theopneustos “. GOD BREATHED ! the speeches of GOD, the Word of GOD.
THE church did not invent the canon of SCRIPTURE any more than NEWTON invented THE LAW OF GRAVITY.
RomCath, repeat this prayer over , and over, and over : OH GOD , WHAT A TREASUERE! HELP US TO LOVE YOUR WORD, TO HONOR YOUR WORD, TO BELIEVE YOUR WORD, TO STUDY YOUR WORD, TO DEFEND YOUR WORD, TO PROCLAIM YOUR WORD. MAKE US APEOPLE OF YOUR BOOK AND WHILE WE ARE FEEDING OURSELVES THE REST OF THE THINGS IN THIS WORLD, LET US NOT FORGET THAT WE REALLY LIVE BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES OUT OF YOUR MOUTH !.

So I guess all those early Christian martyrs really didn’t know what they were dying for because they didn’t have a Bible. Do you know in what what century the first “Bible” appeared?
The Scriptures contain many historical errors but nothing that would prevent one’s salvation. I agree that Scripture is inspired by God but the rest of your rant is nonsense.
Again if it were not for the Catholic Church you would not have a Bible anyway.

Yes, Goodguyex, I did remember the explanation you repeated when I wrote my post above.
Basically, the RCC is still a male dominated church because in the days of Jesus, males were the dominate gender. This is a reason to continue that “tradition’ Goodguyex? Poor excuse. Fortunately things have changed for the better in the last 2000 years, and women are equal or in some cases, better, than the men in certain areas. Guess it can be said that the RCC isn’t an equal opportunity employer. If Mary Magdalene were alive now, I wonder if she would appreciate that. She followed Jesus, there are stories that perhaps they were “more than friends”. True or not, really doesn’t matter.

Pagansis, this has nothing to do with “excuses”. The Abrahamic blood sacrifice of the son is how God revealed himself to mankind. The sequence is clear from Abraham to Moses to Jesus. If this has no meaning to you so be it. Become a Buddist, take up Scientology, join the Rotary club, or Amway or whatever tickles your fancy.
It has meaning to me. Things that do not have meaning to me are not things that I hate and post all the time on the Internet, be it Beliefnet or whatever. It is incomprehensible for you for people like you to be involved in this.
I do not believe in the Easter Bunny, but I am not spending my time writing to those who do.
The only thing that may make sense is that this has some strange type of cosmic quality that attracts both love and hate because at the end of the day the account is true.

Not incomprehensible for me, actually Goodguyex.
Just proves that males still prefer the male dominated church, BECAUSE of the sequence being clear (to some)of Abraham to Moses to Jesus. That has meaning for you.
Who actually knows if God is Male or Female? No one.
You don’t believe in the Easter Bunny? What a spoil sport! Who delivers all those eggs?? Easter is special as renewal of life from the earth resting. Eggs represent life. To some, Jesus being resurrected represents “life” for those that believe. I just happen to believe women represent life, after all, without them, there wouldn’t be any new life!
You’re happy with your beliefs, me with mine. So be it.
Have a good night!

Why is no one in the media mentioning that the Josephites order, founded by Mary MacKillop, ran orphanages where thousands of Australian children were molested and abused. Read about it here: http://cityofangels8.blogspot.com/2010/10/nun-saint-order-abused-thousands-of.html which is, coincidentally, a post about how media never get the story right anymore, at City of Angels Blog.
