Imagine if this were a sign erected by a group of Muslims here in the US. No doubt Beck, Limbaugh, Palin and the crew would be doing backflips trying to be the first to scream out “Sharia law”.

Neither do the folks sponsoring the Park51 center, but that doesn’t seem to stop the protesters from getting their digs in. And from the tone of your statement, Georgia, if a mosque were to put up a sign like this, also with no law behind it, you’d still go nuke over it.

Interesting to read the stories in the NYC papers about the imam behind the mosque. Apparently he is a slumlord of buildings in New Jersey. People are living in terrible conditions and no repairs made. Other than that he wants to be a bridge builder. Right.

The people of Kiryas Joel are only asking people to respect their tradition and values. They are not forcing their traditions and values on anyone, just asking for respect. I think tradition and values are important. God bless them!

If you feel the need to go naked in public don’t go to Kiryas Joel. Leave them in peace. Is that so hard to do?

I think it would be a great idea for Catholic parishes to have a simple sign in the vestibule or outside asking for modesty in dress. No need to get specific I suppose as modesty does have its subjective limits BUT…and maybe this is a CALIF beachtown thing…every try to distribute Holy Communion to numbers of women whose cleavage is slapping you in the face? Not only can you see “London and France” but I have oft times caught site of Belgium and a tad of Holland.

A true story, about a priest I know.
Many years ago, before he was ordained, he served as a Eucharistic Minister at his parish. During the hot summer months, a curvacious woman wearing a tank top approached him for communion. She opened her mouth to receive on the tongue — and the host slipped from his fingers, down into the tank top.
He looked at her in horror. She looked at him in horror. She wasn’t going to touch the Body of Christ. (And, well, HE wasn’t about to go near THAT body…) Time stood still for several anguished seconds. She finally swallowed hard and reached down to retrieve and consume the host.
Looking back on it all these years later, he must wonder from time to time if he made the right choice when he decided not to take matters into his own hands …

Sts. Peter and Paul in San Francisco does actually have a statement on their website asking people to dress modestly. They also request that people not break out into applause for any reason during the Mass. While I appreciate that however, they also have a priest who BADLY needs to retire who, in spite of seeing the very large, very obvious bandage on my throat a few weeks ago, ripped me out publicly for not saying “Amen” loudly enough.
This guy, who is clearly not quite all there anymore and loses his place frequently during Mass (I’ve only ever seen him do daily Mass, though, so I assume others are aware of his limitations) and forgets the words, and repeats sections of the Mass already said, but apparently I’m the big, bad sinner for not being able to shriek “Amen” so loudly they could hear me in Hoboken in spite of the fact I obviously just MIGHT be having a little difficulty in that area…sheesh. He actually sat everyone down at the end of Mass and took the opporunity to single me out and chastize me in front of the (thankfully small) congregation. Nice.
So that modesty stuff can be pretty superficial.
