Our parish is blessed to be served by two wonderful deacons: Deacon Greg Kandra, who is the author of this blog, and Deacon Bill McNamara. Their tireless service is an inspiration and their generous sharing of their talents enriches our parish in so many ways. May God continue to bless Deacon Greg, Deacon Bill, and all of their brother deacons as they minister in His service and in the service of His people. Ad multos annos!

It is great to see the pope mention deacons in his speech. I notice bishops and cardinals also are now regularly mentioning deacons in their talks or homilies–as in “Priests, deacons, religious, and lay people. I also note, thankfully, that the pope did not put the word “permanent” in front of the word “deacon,” but it was obvious who he was referring to.
When I was ordained to the diaconate 30 years ago–and for years afterward–the usual litany was “Priests, religious and lay people”-as though we deacons did not exist.
Of course, one historian of the Church wrote years ago that it takes about a century for the results of a council to work itself into the regular life of the Church.
Now that we exist maybe we can work on Catholics to understand that the Latin Church does have a married clergy (deacons) but not a married priesthood.
