The Jersey Shore—I Honestly Don’t Get It

posted by Linda Mintle

I finally watched an episode of the Jersey Shore. Figured it was time I knew who Snooki and the Situation were since I have seen them all over the television screen handing out awards, dancing with stars and being interviewed. I wanted to know why these people are household names and creating such a stir.

I watched. I almost fell asleep. I totally don’t get it.

The episode I saw was about the gang in Italy. I was embarrassed as an American. They gave new meaning to the “ugly American” persona. Snooki was actually yelling at people to stop talking to her because she doesn’t understand Italian.

Hello! You are in Italy. Do you really think the natives should accommodate your ignorance? Apparently! Maybe that’s the charm? Help me people!

The hour was filled with lots of partying, drinking and sex. From a TV viewing stance, I was bored and found these people uninteresting. I know I’m not the target audience but I am still fascinated with why this program is a hit. So I looked it up. Here’s what I found on EW.com

Jersey show …

creates its own world. (True enough!)

is a sitcom (I never laughed!)

has what people want (This is a scary thought!)

makes people happy (Please get into therapy if this is true!)

And apparently the show has spiked interest in tanning salons (See my article on Tanorexia).

So there you go. I still don’t get it.

Ok well I will be the only one to give another opinion, not the popular one on here but I am an educated(actually I don’t go around announcing this normally but I’m only doing so to make a point, I have a genius IQ) person, and I LOVE Jersery Shore. I get completely why others wouldn’t but I take it all w/ a grain of salt, the reasons I love it are probably the same others don’t. I like it b/c it’s dumb and mindless and to be honest it does make me laugh & make me happy in some weird way(& yes I am in therapy lol). I’m the type of person who thinks ALL the time. I have an insomnia b/c I can’t get my mind to stop. But when I watch Jersey Shore it’s an hr where I don’t have to think about anything about what crazy antics Snooki & the gang are up to. I actually just had a conversation w/ a dear friend who is a fifth grade teacher & she admitted she loves it for the same reason. It relaxes me.
As for Snooki yelling at the person about speaking Italian…you have to watch the show in general to see why that would be funny vs. offensive. Snooki is over the top ridiculous, that’s why she’s so famous. She says anything that comes into her mind & she’s not that bright. But MTV is in on the joke I believe, by the way they edit it. They know they’re ridiculous & they know that’s why people like the show. Also this might not be apparent from watching 1 episode but they do all genuinely care about each other on the show, even though they fight. They’re like a dsyfuncitional more “real” version of “Friends”.Not in their actions but the overall feeling that they’re a “family.” Anyway there you have it. Why I love the Jersey Shore!

I agree. This show is about seeing just how rude and crass rich kids can be. I’m just sorry that our tv viewing audience actually enjoys watching this.

I agree totally with you. According to this program’s popularity being a “Guido or Guidette” is today’s young adults idea of being young and free. Well if that is being young is today, I rather live in the woods and be raised by wolves. What a joke. No wonder our youth is going to hell, this show promotes gossip, promiscuity, selfishness, infidelity and irresponsibilty as a way of life.

Disgusting displays of whores and tramps and cads showing young people what not to do but probably with opposite results.

Was in Jersy with my family as usual during the mid summer. We stay at Brigantine Island. (very nice place) Anyway my duaghter and her friend talk me into going to Seaside Heights for the evening to walk the boardwalk. Well all of a sudden this huge crowd approached as i walked north. In the middle of the crowd were the cast from this show. Girls screaming and swrming around these folks. I thought what the h—. My daughter explained who they were. So out of curiosity i watched a show. Then i realized why i was saying to myself “what the he–”
Like eating a sandwhich with no meat or cheese. I just did not get it!!!
