Some Redemption for Chris Brown

posted by Linda Mintle

“Some Redemption for Chris Brown” was the headline in our local paper. Singer, dancer, pop artist Chris Brown appeared in concert over the weekend. He is talented and a heart throb among teens but the artist and I have had tension.

This summer, my husband, teen daughter and I stood in Rockefeller Plaza, waiting for Chris Brown to perform live on the Today show. Honestly, I struggled with being there.

Chris Brown is the artist who made his recording debut in 2005.  In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault for attacking his then girlfriend, pop star Rhianna. According to reports, she sustained visible facial injuries, a bloody nose and bite marks on her arms.

My daughter and I have discussed Chris Brown many times. There is NEVER a reason for a man to physically abuse a woman. For that matter, women have no excuse to physically attack men either. My daughter has worked with me and the women in domestic violence shelters. She has heard their stories of physical abuse, witnessed their scars and the family destruction.  So I didn’t want to support a pop star who beat up his girlfriend.

But here’s what made me change my mind. As we were discussing the Chris Brown situation, my daughter said, “Mom, you believe in redemption right? You believe people can change because you help them do that. Do you believe Chris brown could be repentant and change? Maybe we should give him a chance and support him for trying to change his life. ”

I couldn’t argue with that! We’ve all made mistakes. We all need grace and mercy to correct our mistakes and try again. So here is hoping that Chris Brown has learned from his mistakes, is getting therapy and will use his incredible talent for good.

Alexis,
If it is true that people can’t change, I would be out of a job. If someone really wants to change their life, they can, especially if the power of the Holy Spirit is operating in them. But they have to want to change and work on the issues that trigger the abuse. The question is, will the music industry encourage him to change, support that and hold him accountable. The industry does not have a great track record but a person can do it if committed.

Good people change, abusers don’t and it is foolish to suggest otherwise. It just encourages battered women to hold on and hope for something that never happens.

I agree with your daughter’s view, and I am happy that a young person has expressed those words. Chris Brown did admit his mistake. How long should he where that badge of shame? He deserves the same opportunity that everyone is entitled – the opportunity to be forgiven.

I commend you and your daughter for seeing that people can and do change. See we can learn from our children. I personally know of a situation similar to Chris and Rihanna’s and I know for a fact that men who may have abuse in the past can change(if they really and truly want it). That’s why I don’t agree with that statement “once he hits he will always hit”. It’s not true in all cases. Redemption and forgiveness.

I’m glad to see you let that hate go out your heart. We aren’t GOD. That’s something he has to ask for forgiveness from GOD and her. We as people try to control other people lives. As being a believer. I can’t keep hate in my heart. There’s a lot of things we wish we could change. Just keep praying for better days. And let GOD do the rest

I agree with your daughter, and you. I believe that we should at least give another person the chance to change. Observe their behavior, and see, if, it changes. Because, if they havent’t changed, it will eventually show. And, I agree w/you, also, because, I once was a anger management counselor for men. And, I strove to turn them away from their violent, destructive ways, some, I’m happy to say HAVE changed; some unfortunately have NOT. But, we ALL deserve, a chance to change.

I think the press and fans have beat up on Chris long enough. He did something wrong, admitted it and has moved on. It’s time we do the same. On the flip side of this, Chris Brown was made out to be the bad guy. But it takes two to tango. Rhianna is not completely faultless in this situation. Through my own experience, I know that women can be very provocative in these situations. While I agree that a man should not hit a women, neither does she have the right to provoke him. Chris had to apologize; where is Rhianna’s apology and judicial punishment for her part in this.

My comment is Chris , like most young men get into relationships fall in love and not really ready for that kind of thing so when they disagree about things, they are not mature enough to handle it get out of hand so don’t blame his heart because sometimes your heart tells you one thing and your head tells you something else so yes for give him he has a long way to go and God Bless him he’ll do better next time around i love he’s a good kid.

I think that he paid for his crim and people should leave him alone. It not right that they always bring this up all the time he is a good person and his songs are insprieing to people and youg adults. he dosen’t have to be judge every time his name comes up he works hard for what he did and paied for it. Just like Star Jones said leave the boy youn man alone. I’m a hug fan of Chris Brown too and he dosen’t diserved this hatered all the time.
