Lose Weight with Journaling - DAY SIX

Tuesday January 6, 2009

In my Joy of Weight Loss: An Easy Guide to Fitness book, and in my work with clients and workshop participants I always begin with making a journal of what's eaten, along with physical activities, time, place and emotions.

Journals or logs are a wonderful way for you to become conscious of the connections between what you eat and do, the circumstances and events around the behaviors, and emotions.

One client, Nancy, who came to one of my early workshops years ago made only one change and lost 70 pounds.  What change did she make?  She began keeping a journal and logged everything.  She kept this up for several years, even after she had lost the weight.  No other changes: no dieting, no intense exercising, just becoming mindful.  That's it.  What a powerful technique this is.

Log a few days, then take a few minutes to draw circles around important words.  Words you've chosen that might explain what's motivating you to eat certain things, kinds of foods or particular amounts.  It will let you see what physical activities you're doing, how long, when, and what feelings are associated.
