Keeping it Real

Tell the truth today, as much as possible, in every instance. Say what you're really feeling and thinking -- unless it would actually hurt someone for them to hear it. If you find it hard to reveal your true thoughts, at least start by being totally real to yourself.

Tell yourself exactly what you think and feel. The more real we are, the less we have to worry about hiding, or covering up for our shame, guilt, or embarrassment. Eating too much and making ourselves fat is, in another way, hiding from life. We're avoiding showing or being the true, real, healthy selves we were created to be.

Sweet Surrender

Last week, I wrote about surrendering your problems to God.  Last month, I wrote about surrendering your problems to God.

Have you tried it yet?  I encourage you to right now.

A way to really solve your weight problems (and all of the others, too) is to surrender them to God. Get on your knees, and put your faith into action. Right now! Say something in your own words, from the heart, like: "God, I can't do this life alone. I need your help. I'm in your hands." Then symbolically reach out and hand your problems over to God.

Have a good cry while you're at it. Or let out a big sigh of relief. Sometimes, I even laugh to release - try it - see the lighter side. While you are at it, take a look at the good things in life and count your blessings.

Cheri, a regular reader, also beautifully commented on surrender.

Fellowship for All

Have you ever been to an anonymous support group meeting? They can be really interesting and valuable and you meet people you can relate to, because they're having similar experiences with being overweight.

You can also discover cool groups at churches, synagogues, temples, community centers, hospitals, through your local newspaper listings, or United Way or your local public library. Don't be afraid or ashamed to go. You'll have a good time, and it can be quite inspiring and emotionally cleansing, too.

Overeaters Anonymous is one such group with thousands of meetings all over the world. There you might find others with spiritual beliefs like yours. You may also discover new ways of dealing with the problem of obesity or being overweight. Certainly, you can find new friends, enjoying fellowship and compassion for this most difficult problem.

KGC

I'm pretty happy that they've taken the "F" out of KFC.  Now it should be KGC, for Kentucky Grilled Chicken.  The massive chain has begun grilling instead of frying everything.  Be careful, though, there's still lots of fat, sugar and salt in the side  dishes though.

According to the Nutrition Action Health Letter (July/Aug. 2009), KFC's grilled chicken is now 25 to 50% less calories than its fried cousin.   According to KFC's website nutrition page a grilled chicken breast is 180 calories, compared to the fried 370 (extra crispy is 490).  Saturated fat is only 1 gram, versus 5-7 in the fried.  They no longer use trans fats in any product.

One problem:  they still use a lot of salt.  440 mgs in a breast, 320 in a thigh.  That's pretty salty, and not good for us.

So KFC may indeed be setting the lead in international fast food chain healthier choices.  Bravo for KFC!

Recipe: Quick Salsa Sauce for Meat

Here's a really fast, easy, and delicious way to make an entrée:

Use salsa as a sauce (that's what the word "salsa" means to begin with)!

Buy an inexpensive jar of tomato salsa (mild, medium or hot) and spoon it over grilled, baked or broiled chicken, fish, pork or beef.

Better yet, make your own from diced tomatoes, ¼ cup diced onion, ¼ cup diced green or yellow peppers, and a dash of herbs (cilantro, dill, oregano, thyme, whatever you fancy).  Get creative and add some other good stuff, like chopped pineapple, peaches, mango or papaya.

Salsa's not just for chips, dear friend!
