Recipe: Homemade Soda

Tuesday October 13, 2009

Soda, the usual kind, carries lots of calories and no nutrition.  I've written many times before: if you can manage to give up a daily soda you might lose 5-10 pounds in a month.  The problem is, if you are a soda-lover, it may be hard to give up soda entirely.  Until now.

Here are my simple recipes for homemade, healthier soda.  Why are they healthier?  They're relatively low-calorie, have no added sugar, and actually contain some nutrients.

Dr. Norris Chumley's Fruit Soda

1 oz. (a shot glass) of fruit juice (pure juice, not "juice drink") my favorites are orange, raspberry, black cherry, pomegranite.

8 oz. glass of seltzer (not club soda, which contains salt)

Dr. Norris Chumley's Lemonade Soda

1 packet (a teaspoon) of Stevia extract natural sweetener
2 tablespoons lemon juice, from a fresh lemon or bottled pure lemon juice.
1 16 oz. glass of seltzer

Add some crushed-ice and stir.

Great idea!

I simmer lots of ginger in a little water and when it cools, add stevia, then keep in fridge as a "syrup" to add to bubbly water. Also mint. Anise hyssop, "licorice mint," tastes like licorice and makes a great treat.

I like to brew healthy nutritious herbs, like nettle, oatstraw, alfafa, red raspberry and red clover, either alone or together, for four hours to steep out all the minerals- maybe a tablespoon of dry herb each per 2 cups of water, so up to 10 TB herb per two cups. (Proportions do not have to be exact.)

When it cools I strain, sweeten w/stevia, and then dilute by pouring over ice or by adding hot water, depending on the season. Sometimes I add mint to flavor, besides the health benefits.

In summer I drink this iced tea all day, in winter as hot tea all day. It's very satisfying and really helps those mineral-driven cravings.
