Recipe: Zero-Calorie Double Pleasure Sweet Tea

Thursday November 5, 2009

I can't believe how great this hot (or cold) drink is!  Sweet, tasty, no calories, no caffeine, and helps me curb hunger and lose weight.

Ever been at a bar and heard someone say to the bartender, "make it a double?"  That's what this drink is about.  Double flavor, doubly sweet. NO alcohol, fat, or sugar, though.

Here's the very simple recipe:

Dr. Norris Chumley's Double Sweet Tea

8 ounces boiling hot water
2 tea bags of berry herbal tea (I like Celestial Seasoning's Black Cherry or Raspberry)
2 packets of Stevia no-calorie sweetener

Add all the ingredients at one time.  Let it steep double the time (6 minutes or so).  This makes the tea rather strong; the flavor is doubled and very candy-like.  If you want it iced, let it steep a little longer and add some ice cubes, or better yet -- let it cool in the fridge overnight (perhaps make a lot more, in a pitcher).

This tea is amazing!  I'm drinking it every night: the times when I so strongly wanted carbs or sweets, difficult to handle threats to throw my weight loss and/or maintenance off-track.  This tea satisfies my sweet-tooth in a big way, with no calories.

It's healthy as it hydrates the body.  It curbs hunger pangs.  It helps one get a full-feeling.

Try it, you'll like it!  Let me know what you think by commenting below.

Beau,

Is that powder the same as cocoa?

Great coffee suggestion from Beau! Thank you!

I like the Sweet Tea idea - I make something similar but add a nourishing and mild tea like nettle, oatstraw, alfafa when steeping, - so it tastes great and is nourishing.

I also make "ice cream" with goat milk (can use any milk, cream or yogurt), stevia, vanilla, - then any flavoring, like carob, cocoa, nuts, fresh or frozen fruit - and added spics like cardamom, cinnamon, mint. I blend and either put it in our ice cream maker, or pour into a flattish dish and put in the freezer, stirring occasionally as it freezes for ice cream texture (takes 0ne t0 2 or 3 hours depending on amount.)

Good idea. Except I am a little wary of artificial sweeteners. My recipe is:

Heat a cup of water to which a few pieces of ginger (total length about half an inch, cut into say six pieces,) have been added, in the Microwave. The length of time you keep it depends on your Microwave, and the strength of the tea you need.

Remove the ginger pieces by filtering, add a few drops of lemon, and voila` a cheap, tasty, calorie free, diabetic friendly drink!

Hi. Stevia is an herbal extract, natural sweetener and not artificial.

For a satisfying non-sweet "tea", I like to brew Japanese "Mugi-cha" and keep it in the refrigerator, particularly in summer. It's made from roasted barley--it's the roasted type iced tea drink they serve in Japanese noodle places. You can find it in Japanese markets.

Lisa,
The chocolate powder is cocoa, but on the container lists itself as 100% cacao and is used for baking. It only has 5 calories per tbls and tastes better (to me) than the other type of unsweetened cocoa powder in the same type of container - which has 20 calories per tbls.
The reason I use stevia is that it not artifial but from the leaves of a SouthAmerican plant. I used to use a "specific" sucrose artificial sweetener manufactured from sugar (I am trying to not use the names of these products in case of some type of non-published rule).
I have been using stevia to replace all sugar in baking (I'm a Type II) but occasionly add the "sucrose" sweetener, too. It is really surprising to find that the longer a person avoids sugar, there is less toleration to sugar.
If you try the home version coffee house replacement, you will find you prefer your own concoction to the commercial. At $6 a cup, the revenge of making and taking your own w/ you is truly sweet.
