Meet Helene, a woman who has lost 50 pounds and kept it off over 23 years. See if you can relate to her words...
"I was out on my own the first time (in my early 20's) and started to
meet men and whatever; I didn't handle it very well. I didn't have the
tools to cope on a daily basis. So...I found my comforter again, which
was food. What happened is this kind of chubby girl grew into a kind of
chubby, borderline fattish person, (I was about 50 pounds overweight).
And then, as I went on and on and on in my twenties, I just felt very
isolated, very much not a part of things, and the more I'd feel that, I
would eat. And the food initially would bring a lot of quick pleasure,
but it never did in the long run. I was really feeling very, very
alone... and I remember being in my apartment and looking out a window
and feeling at my lowest. At that moment I said to myself, what's the
sense in continuing on? But there was that spark in me, and I believe
that spark in everyone...that wants to live...the desire to live was
greater than the part of me that wanted to check out."
Through belief in a Higher Power, Helene saw a way greater than herself; a
solution bigger than her self-destructive feelings. That Higher Power
she relied on was what helped her lose and keep the 50 pounds off.
What if doing something you dread could really be fun and pleasurable? What would happen if you did not have a lot of fear, anxiety and trepidation?
If you simply don't believe the old mental programming that losing weight, becoming healthier, and making some positive changes in your life is a drag - then it can actually BE fun and pleasurable. It's just that easy: CHOOSE TO BELIEVE SOMETHING NEW.
Begin to believe that being healthy is a pleasure, because it honestly is. It's not about depriving you or causing you pain and suffering. Eating healthy foods is truthfully really wonderful.
Here's how: the next time you catch yourself thinking the worst, just turn it around and give it to God (or Higher Power). Here's a list of possibilities:
I can't do this >> I can do it with God's help. I'll be too hungry >> I'll feed myself regularly and healthfully. I cannot have dessert >> I can have a healthy dessert. I'm tired >> I'll get more energy with healthy habits & give myself rest. This is torture >> This is an act of self-love and care. Gyms are hellish >> Gyms are temples of health and happiness. Goodbye good food >> Hello great, better food. I don't have time for changes >> I'm making myself a priority.
Let's add to this list together. Please post a comment about how you're changing your old destructive beliefs into new, active, loving careful beliefs.
And please tell your friends about this daily column - treat them to some love and thoughtfulness!

Can prayer help with weight loss?
I believe owning a weight problem and having the courage to surrender
and ask God for help is the best way possible. Call it prayer,
spiritual communication, meditation, or simply belief--just do
it--because it works. Once you ask for help, you immediately feel that
a great weight is lifted. You're no longer all alone with your problem,
and you feel loved. If you could solve your excess weight problem by
yourself, you would have by now. We spiritual people with faith on our
side have great power given to us. We should use that magnificent power
of the universe! Tap into that Sweet Divine Love that's always there, waiting for us, guiding us, and caring so deeply.
If you are at the end of your rope, and have tried
everything--congratulations--you are likely to be very ready to put
your faith into action. God (Jesus, or Higher Power, Spirit, Goddess,
Nature...) is ready for you, too. Just ask through a prayer...right
now. Just say, "I need help."
The trend with little kids these days is to make "play dates." This is
when the parents arrange for the their children to get together and have a
good time.
I'd like to suggest that adults do it, too. Why not make a play date
with a friend or co-worker today? Get together to do something active,
like going for an evening walk or to a school or park playground, or
shooting a basketball through the hoop or tossing a Frisbee.
Please don't think you're too old for that. Don't let anyone think it's
a "pick-up" either (or may be it is!). It's really good for us to
connect and be together. Just do it.
Please don't think you're too fat, just do it.
What are some activities you love to play? What are some you are planning to schedule a "play date" for?
Here's what I'm serving to some dear friends tonight for supper, a lasagna big in flavor but small in calories and fat. It's a meatless recipe, using root vegetables from the garden; kind of the last of this year's harvest. It's got a whole wheat pasta, too, so you're getting fiber and whole grains. I have included a little cheese, for protein, but that could be omitted if you wish.
Dr. Norris Chumley's Roasted Vegetable Lasagna
1 box whole-wheat lasagna noodles 5 parsnips 5 carrots 10 big leaves of kale, de-stemmed and torn into pieces ½ onion ½ pound skim mozzarella cheese, shredded 1 can or bottle (16oz.) tomato sauce (I like the herb and vegetable combinations) a few sprinkles of grated low-fat Parmesan cheese or Romano cheese herbs: some fresh (or dried) oregano and thyme
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Boil a big pot of water for the pasta. Lightly spread 1 tablespoon olive oil on a baking sheet, then on a second one. Place the baking sheets in the oven and heat them up for 10 minutes. In the meantime, place the kale in a smaller saucepan with a cube of bouillon and ½ cup water, cover, and steam the kale. Slice the parsnips and carrots lengthwise, about ½ inch thick, so they're long and thin - the size of your finger. Slice the onion into wedges, about ½ inch wide. Place the dried pasta into the boiling water, and cook for about 10 minutes, or for as long as it says on the box. No need to add anything else: no oil, no salt, just boiling water. Lightly stir occasionally.
Once the baking sheets are hot, but before the oil is allowed to burn, quickly place the carrots and parsnips onto the pans and pop them into the oven. Be sure to only have one layer of vegetables, allowing plenty of room around each piece. Bake for about 30 minutes, and then test to see if they're done. If not, continue baking for 10-20 minutes or so.
Lightly grease an 8x12 metal or ceramic baking dish with about a teaspoon of olive oil. Once the pasta is ready, drain and immediately soak the cooked lasagna noodles in cold water. Remove the roasted vegetables.
Layer the pasta, vegetables, sauces, herbs and shredded cheese in about 5 or 6 layers, alternating them, as you like. Make the top layer a combination of a little sauce, some shredded mozzarella, and a few sprinkles of Parmesan cheeses, for a gratin. Cover with aluminum foil.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 20 minutes or so, checking every few minutes to see if the top cheeses have melted and slightly browned.
Serve piping hot with a nice salad on the side and some friends and family to share it with. Be sure to say grace or a silent prayer before the meal, thanking God for the food and all that you are blessed with.
