Is Sammy Sosa following in Michael Jackson's footsteps?
Recent photos of Sosa show the retired Cubs baseball star with dramatically lighter skin after what he calls 'skin rejuvenation treatments'.
Speculation is rampant, and I feel...
By now there is nothing shocking about the fact that some shows' sole purpose seem to be pushing the envelope. I'm not a Gossip Girl follower, but the few times I've caught an episode, I found myself spouting off like an old fuddy-duddy.
"How
old is that girl?" "When I was her age, I didn't even know what that
was!" etc etc.
For instance, a threesome. Ok, I'm sure at 16, I could have put two and two together (or, I suppose, two and one together) but I sure wouldn't have thought of it on my own. And I most definitely wouldn't have been taking part in one.
Apparently,
3 of our favorite GG characters both know exactly what a threesome is and will be taking part in one on this Monday's episode. Time for sweeps week, people, and making money the old-fashioned way -- the promotion of promiscuous teens!
Now, I'm a strong advocate of freedom of expression and speech, so I'm not sure where I fall on this debate. Personally, I'd love to see some sort of responsibility on the part of the network and the show's writers and producers. Again, not to sound like a fuddy-duddy, but a
threesome? Come on!
What do you think? Is this crossing the line? Should we look for a stronger sense of social responsibility from those that are entertaining us?
Cameron Diaz's new movie (also starring Frank Langella and James Marsden) is out today, posing the moral question, "Would you kill a stranger to keep your own family well? Watch the trailer and let us know:
According to CNN, legendary film director Roman Polanski was on his way to receive a lifetime achievement award in Switzerland when he was grabbed up by police on a warrant
issued in 1978. Said the Zurich Film Festival that is now
sans guest of honor:
"Roman Polanski, who is one of the greatest film directors of all time, would have been honored for his life's work in Zurich today. However yesterday, on Saturday, he was taken into custody while attempting to enter Switzerland due to a request by U.S. authorities in connection with an arrest warrant from 1978."
Polanski had pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer back in '77, then fled the country to evade his sentence. There have been rumblings over the years that his case was mishandled, however. According to the Huffington Post's article, Polanski had "asked a U.S. appeals court in California to overturn a judges' refusal to throw out his case. He claims misconduct by the now-deceased judge who had arranged a plea bargain and then reneged on it."
And even his victim seems to wish the whole thing would just fade from memory. Says the CNN news article:

Yeah, yeah, guys have been robbing the cradle since before there were cradles. But do we like it when they're the culprits? Noooo. We scorn "trophy wives" (a hideous moniker for women to throw at other women, IMO) and look down our noses at rich older gents parading their "nieces" at certain old-school Italian restaurants.
So, why's it suddenly so fashionable to have a much younger lad on your arm?
As Courteney Cox's new vehicle "Cougar Town" shows, women in their mid-forties, late forties, and beyond are coming out of the shadows - and kudos, ladies for claiming your mojo. There's no reason not to revel in your sexuality, your buying power, or your societal relevance in every possible way.
But is it ethically correct to date much younger men?

Paddy and I thought we'd toss in our two cents on the whole civility debate. After all, we'd hardly be an "Everyday Ethics" blog if we didn't have an opinion on everyday cultural behavior trends. So here goes. Hillary:...

I haven't blogged about the David Carradine story up 'til now, because, well, I thought it was somewhat unethical to dredge the actor's death into the public spotlight more than it already was (if that were possible). I'm of the...
