Mooching Off Your Parents: An Adult Child's Perspective

When is it time to cut the parental purse-strings? It seems these days that's happening later and later - or never, at least among some of the people I know. Maybe it's because our parents' generation earned more or saved more wisely than my own, but I seem to be part of a subset that's (at least partially) subsidized by loving, doting parents.

One friend I know uses her mother as her mortgage holder. Others accept help putting their kids through private school. I myself have been the recipient of my family's largess too often to enumerate. It's been an enormous help.

But is it wrong?

Racy Halloween Costumes For Kids: Outrageous, Sad, And... Inevitable?

As Halloween draws nigh, the questions fly... "What are you dressing up as this year?"

For me, the answer is simple. I'm dressing up as that frumpy hausfrau who opens the door and ladles candy out to the adorable kiddies trick-or-treating in her building.

When I was younger (like, early twenties), the answer was more likely, "I'm squeezing myself into something slutty and trying not to freeze my buns off all night as I tear around town getting tipsy." (I had a misspent couple of years there.)

But as a child, it was all about good, clean fun. I was: a ghost (this meant a sheet with two holes cut out for eyes, as my mom and dad were not home-ec types); a witch (store-bought flame retardant black crepey ghoulishness); a ballerina (oh, how I loved that tutu!); a hippie (borrowed bell-bottoms and a Cher wig), and a devil in red flannel.

All my friends and I cared about was scoring candy, telling ghost stories, carving pumpkins and bobbing for apples. Now...?

Falcon Heene: The Boy Who Cried 'Balloon'?

Falcon Heene balloon boy t shirtWhen six-year-old Falcon Heene captured the nation's attention by--apparently--being swept away in a homemade helium balloon, we all stopped in our tracks. I was in the midst of a frantic day of web producing (whatever that means) when a coworker shouted the news. We all gathered around her computer monitor to watch, rapt and heart-sick, as the silvery, disk-like balloon tumbled helplessly through the atmosphere, supposedly carrying a terrified tot in its innards.

Now, questions are being raised about the Heene family. Apparently, they're known for their showmanship, publicity seeking, etc, and have appeared on reality shows like Wife Swap more than once. Is Balloon Boy a hoax? Was this all a publicity stunt?

And if so, where's the harm? Well, ever heard of The Boy Who Cried Wolf?

Child Adopted Then Returned: Did Anita Tedaldi Do The Right Thing?

Oh, boy do I not want to blog about this. Talk about a topic where I know not whereof I speak... Anita Tedaldi, who first posted an essay about her experiences as the adoptive mother of baby "D" in the New York Times' Motherlode blog, went on the Today Show to further elucidate what made her decide to give up the child she'd adopted after 18 months of trying but failing to bond with the boy.

Uncomfy as I feel opening such a squirmy can of worms when I'm not a mom myself, I do think parenting ethics ought to be covered by this blog, so I'm going to throw the story out there to you all.

Watch the Today Show clip and then weigh in...

Fighting In Front Of The Kids: Never, Sometimes, Or... They'll Get Over It?

I'd like to pose a question for all the parents out there -- and for all those who lived through tough family situations as they were growing up.

Is it OK for parents to fight in front of their kids?

I'm no parenting expert, and that's not really the focus of this blog, but an event happened in my immediate sphere last evening that brought the topic to mind. There were angry parents and a tearful ten-year-old involved. No one meant for anyone to get upset; it just happened, and the child was a witness to an argument between his parents that freaked him out a bit. No lasting harm, I don't think -- his parents explained the reason for their fight later, explained things weren't going down the tubes between them or anything -- they'd just had a spat. He calmed down, wiped his tears, went back to playing his video games.

Still, I couldn't help wondering... should they not have practiced more restraint?

What-If Wednesday: Would You Get In The Middle Of A School Bus Fight?

About Everyday Ethics

This blog is all about ethics. It's also about us--ordinary people facing ordinary situations. It's about asking ourselves the hard questions: What responsibility do we bear in our interactions (and yes, confrontations) with the people we meet? How do we best respond to those around us in a way that leaves us feeling good about ourselves and confident our behavior has done no harm? Have we helped or hurt our fellows in these moments? It's our belief that by asking some big questions (and some little ones too) we can grow as humans. We're glad you're along for the ride!
