Mooching Off Your Parents: An Adult Child's Perspective

When is it time to cut the parental purse-strings? It seems these days that's happening later and later - or never, at least among some of the people I know. Maybe it's because our parents' generation earned more or saved more wisely than my own, but I seem to be part of a subset that's (at least partially) subsidized by loving, doting parents.

One friend I know uses her mother as her mortgage holder. Others accept help putting their kids through private school. I myself have been the recipient of my family's largess too often to enumerate. It's been an enormous help.

But is it wrong?

On Black Friday, Would You Push Other Holiday Shoppers Out Of The Way?

We all know what's just around the bend: Black Friday! Even as I write out my shopping list of Thanksgiving cooking ingredients, I know that the day after, stuffed with turkey, I'll be eyeballing the 2009 Black Friday sales. And this year, with the recession hitting so hard, there are sure to be incredible deals for those who can lift their somnolent selves off the couch (even to get to the computer and shop online) and engage in some hardcore retail therapy.

But in recent years, the frenzy for bargains has led to some ugly incidents, such as the Wal-Mart employee who was trampled to death last November.

So my "What-if Wednesday" question for you bargain-hunting shoppers is: How far would you go to get the best deals?

Have any horror stories or funny tales of Black Friday sales past? Tell us in the comments field below.

Butting In -- Yea or Nay?

Yesterday I completed my move from New York City (a move that began 3 weeks ago and paused for a moment in the Midwest) into San Francisco. I was feeling pretty great when I landed; friendly, accommodating people, easy trip, and hey, exciting new beginnings!

I debated my choices in transportation -- lugging my suitcases to a train that would take me to the center of the city, or taking a taxi that would run me upwards of $40-50...or happily, taking a door-to-door shuttle for a mere $17. I of course chose the shuttle and was incredibly relieved to find such a convenient option, and could finally just sit back and bask in a future of possibilities.

Until passenger number two arrived. I was engrossed in a book, so didn't notice the commotion in the backseat until I heard voices rising. Apparently the driver had asked the man if he preferred to pay by cash or credit card. His answer: credit card. However, in order to pay by credit card, he had to fill out a form (I was allowed to skip this 'ordeal' because I paid cash).

He told the driver to do it. "I'm the customer, right? Right?" With a mere sigh, the driver acquiesced and filled the form out for the passenger, even though it would have been MUCH simpler for the man to fill it out himself.

After the form was completed, the driver wrote down the fare ($17) and asked the man if he'd like to add a tip to his credit card. The man said no, of course not. He would add a tip at the end of the trip. A reasonable response in my mind.

What was not reasonable came next. The driver asked the passenger to sign the receipt. The man refused. He said he would sign at the end of the trip. The driver explained he needed this signature now. The man refused again, and in a slightly threatening manner, told the driver not to get him agitated. The driver stopped asking and tried simply staring him down.

The man, indeed growing agitated and more threatening, started yelling. "I'm the customer, aren't I? I am! I am the customer." He was in the poor driver's face, raging. When he caught me peering through the seats in front at this unsettling exchange, he tried to bring me into the fray. "Ma'am, this is crazy, isn't it?"

Friday Failure: Am I a Blowhard?

My Friday failure...well, this is an easy one. When it comes to ethical living, I am a ridiculous, in-your-face, know-it-all -- to my family.

I sadly saw the light mid-lecture after my mom made an innocent comment about the lottery and how she would help spread the wealth around if she was so lucky to win. I immediately launched into my spiel, "You're never going to win the lottery, Mom, so that's easy for you to say! Instead of dreaming you should DO something! SAVE THE WORLD! IT IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY!"

My apologies for the capital letters and overuse of exclamation points, but I'm ashamed to admit that is the best way to re-create the 'crazy' (though, I didn't really use the words "save the world"). Midway through my rant, I realized my mom's eyes had glazed over and she had the look of someone resigned and familiar to torture. So, it's possible I do this often...

Small-Time Ethics: Are My Priorities In Life Out Of Whack?

Ah, folks. In a world full of Louisiana officials who won't marry interracial couples, celebrity chefs battling it out with their fiancees, boys failing to fly off in balloons, and politicians winning premature prizes, why is it I care so much more about my own little quibbles?

I woke up this morning after my first full night of rest in several days, surrounded by cats, husbeast, and the detritus of a week's worth of sloppy, choppy housework. Blogging was not, I can tell you, uppermost on my mind. Coffee was rather more urgent. Then finishing up all my unplayed games of Lexulous on Facebook. (What are the ethics of getting yourself into 17 games with strangers, and what are your obligations to finish playing them all in a timely manner?) Then making the bed, combing my hair, picking up shoes and socks and nasty Chinese food containers, and emptying trash and...

Friday Failure: Just Because You Can, Doesn't Mean You Should

My People, the People of Wal-Mart

Is There a Free Pass When People Are Just Plain Annoying?

About Everyday Ethics

This blog is all about ethics. It's also about us--ordinary people facing ordinary situations. It's about asking ourselves the hard questions: What responsibility do we bear in our interactions (and yes, confrontations) with the people we meet? How do we best respond to those around us in a way that leaves us feeling good about ourselves and confident our behavior has done no harm? Have we helped or hurt our fellows in these moments? It's our belief that by asking some big questions (and some little ones too) we can grow as humans. We're glad you're along for the ride!
