Strictly by the numbers, it doesn’t add up. From The Wrap: This year, 168 films have carried the “restricted” (R) rating, which requires youths under 17 to be accompanied by an adult, and they have taken in $2.3 billion at the box office. That compares to 113 PG-13 films, with a $4.7 billion take, and 52 PG movies with a combined gross of $1.8 billion…This year’s top four films – “The Avengers,” “Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Amazing Spider-Man”– are all rated PG-13. And of the top 25 film franchises of all time, only one – “The Matrix” — carried an “R” rating, so it’s a dollars and cents issue.
Comment: It’s certainly not a dollars and sense issue. And it belies the notion that Hollywood is simply giving the public what it wants.

Pope Benedict XVI: The Movie. From Reuters: The Odeon Film company said producers Marcus Mende and Peter Weckert planned a film for international release based on a biography by journalist Peter Seewald due to be published in early 2014.
Comment: Papal discretion Advised? Probably not. The story goes on report that Seewald, who has already published three book-length interviews with the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, will serve as a consultant on the film. And, Reuters notes, the Odeon press release reads “The producers plan an international film that illustrates all aspects of the extraordinary life and work of Joseph Ratzinger from his birth on Easter night in 1927 in Marktl am Inn in Bavaria to his pontificate today.”
