Earth Hour 2009: Turn Off the Lights 3/28

posted by hrossi | 3:42pm Wednesday March 11, 2009

What difference can one person make? Ask the organizers of “Earth Hour,” who saw their idea to fight climate change by turning off electrical power for 60 minutes spread in two years from a local project in Sydney, Australia to a global phenomenon.

Here in Boston, the Citgo sign, Prudential Center, Zakim Bridge, and other landmarks will “go dark” from 8:30-9:30 pm on March 28.  Will your city participate (some of the other participating cities: Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas)?  Will you?

The video below should power up your inspiration to participate, so to speak.  I particularly love the song they feature: “One Crowded Hour.”  Indeed.  Wow.

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers
Because I lack an engineering degree and don't understand why we can't just stop this thing NOW with a 10-ton wad of gum or giant boulder or massive Q-tip, I'll share more spiritual wisdom from elders. This is from the beautiful, amazing International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers--they each

Fresh Morning: Worry Away the Worry
"Worry is a prayer for something you don't want." - Sharon Gannon I love that. The other day someone expressed concern about my excessive worrying habit, and I've been contemplating on it ever since. Doing my best to actually contemplate, rather than worry. I've been on a renewed Gilmore G

How Did You (or a Loved One) Heal from Cancer?
In addition to co-writing this blog and working at Beliefnet full-time, I'm writing a book. It's about how I got through cancer five years ago with a combination of heavy-duty Western meds and all I knew from my personal and journalistic experience of yoga, meditation, non-religious spirituality, an

I’m participating this year, and I need to decide what to do during that hour–I want to do something special (last year I read Harry Potter by candlelight).

Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers. Check it out at http://www.commit21.com/

The new Vote Earth 2009 global website has launched. There is an element on the site that incorporates Google’s Friend Connect and we want to get 1 billion people on the site by November before Copenhagen. A big ask, so we need some help.
To get involved, all you need to do is:
1. Go to the site – http://www.voteearth2009.org
2. Register with Friend Connect
3. Send to a friend and get more people to sign up.
We need to get as many people as we can involved. So please encourage your friends to get involved.
Get involved and VOTE EARTH!
