Again? It was spinach, then peanuts, and now pistachios. After a batch of trail mix tested postive for salmonella, about a million pounds of the apparent pistachio culprit were recalled from stores. And consumers are now on “pistachio watch.” According to a CBS news article, “Right now, the FDA is advising Americans not to eat pistachios but not to throw away their pistachios either. Basically, people should hold on to their pistachios until the FDA knows more about which products are affected.” Sigh. This is a serious issue. But pistachios? Extra sad–they are so yummy.
What is up with our food supply? It’s a question lots of people are discussing these days–how factory farming and other issues are contributing to these kinds of problems. Sort of makes you want to grow a veggie garden just like the White House is doing–though maybe with some nut trees too.
Here’s an interesting article on food contamination by Michael Pollan.
What do you make of these recent food recall events? Do you think there’s a bigger problem or just better and more testing?

There’s lots of talk these days about greater transparency in the food supply chain, too– which I’m all for. If you shop at farmers markets this is built in (hello farmer! thanks for the kale!) but for most food it’s an anonymous buy-and-sell situation.
The NYT had a piece on this:

Several issues come to mind regarding the causes of these outbreaks. Proper Employee training, personal accountability and responsibility to do the proper job correctly, In house inspections of equipment cleanliness, and having the proper peolpe in positions of responsibility. The equipment cleanliness and proper repair is probably the biggest issue. Some facilities have equipment that is quite old and the old addage, “If it ain’t brole, don’t fix it.” doesn’t count here anymore. IT IS BROKE ! The food supply is our number one responsibility. Proper inspection and control of imports is required, too.

I live in a city that sends out monthly reminders that our water has high levels of arsenic in it…we installed a whole-house water filtering system..
Each week we buy food from our local stores that is spoiled in ONE day…we are planting a fenced-in garden..
I have it better than some, not as good as many..
Every single living being needs clean water, air, and food source.

While there is much to be discussed for the cause of these outbreaks, nevertheless, giving the “buy- local food” movement a chance, by actually buying local food, will save us all a lot of heartache.
