Thanks for The Lorax, Dr. Seuss

posted by vreiss | 12:00pm Monday March 2, 2009

Here at Fresh Living, we salute the imaginative, word-bending genius Theodore Seuss Geisel on what would have been his 105th birthday. We especially adore The Lorax, of course. I just checked out the video (see below) for the first time in years (woah groovy 1970′s soundtrack!) and got sad/happy chills re-hearing his prescient words, which couldn’t be more relevant today:

“My name is The Lorax and I speak for the trees–let ‘em grow, let ‘em grow! But nobody listens too much dontcha know. I speak for the trees and I’ll yell and I’ll shout for the fine things on earth that are on their way out! They say I’m old-fashioned and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast.”

Thanks, Dr. S., for this inspiring creature to remind us of the importance of protecting disappearing life and beauty–and that we really don’t need any more thneeds.

What’s your favorite Seuss tale?

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers
Because I lack an engineering degree and don't understand why we can't just stop this thing NOW with a 10-ton wad of gum or giant boulder or massive Q-tip, I'll share more spiritual wisdom from elders. This is from the beautiful, amazing International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers--they each

How Did You (or a Loved One) Heal from Cancer?
In addition to co-writing this blog and working at Beliefnet full-time, I'm writing a book. One overlooked character of Suessian birth
Is Bartholomew Cubbins, a boy of great worth
His walks upon stilts and sports one hun-dred hats
He battles the Oobleck, and much more than that.
If modeling Bart, you could do much worse
He’s willing to challenge and won’t take a purse
Foolish kings and vain people will get their come uppance
And Bart is quite happy to take not a tuppence
The Lorax is great and Horton is grand,
Thidwick and Sneetches all earn a hand,
Thing one and Thing two, and the Cat all well lauded;
But take time for Batholomew, and you’ll be rewarded

Awesome, Jestrfyl! I remember the 100 hat story too. I can see the tottering tower now….
One of my favorite forgotten Seuss stories is “I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew.” Does anyone remember it? It’s a journey to a city “on the banks of the beautiful River Wa-Hoo, Where they never have troubles! At least, very few….”
