The White House Veggie Garden

posted by vreiss | 3:00pm Friday March 20, 2009

whitehousegarden.jpgWe try and steer away from politics here, but we are openly swooning over the Obamas’ decision to grow a vegetable garden on the White House lawn. According to The New York Times, it will have 55 varieties of vegetables, including kale, collards, arugula, and chard. There will also be a patch of berries, herbs like cilantro and Thai basil, and two beehives for honey! Twenty-three fifth-graders will help plant the garden and all of the Obamas will be helping with the weeding, “whether they like it or not,” says Michelle.

The idea is not only to have fresh food for her family, but to educate kids and parents everywhere about eating real, unprocessed foods that are locally grown. And she’s careful to note to the Times that if you’re not a home gardener for whatever reason, you can just start where you are: “You can begin in your own cupboard by eliminating processed food, trying to cook a meal a little more often, trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables.”

Seeds and mulch for the entire White House vegetable garden: $200

Educating millions about the delicious healthiness of DIY food production: Very cool

The Obamas making home gardening, fresh eating, and sustainability as popular as they made J.Crew outfits: Priceless

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers
Because I lack an engineering degree and don't understand why we can't just stop this thing NOW with a 10-ton wad of gum or giant boulder or massive Q-tip, I'll share more spiritual wisdom from elders. Too bad the gov’t is trying to criminalize all organic gardens in the next two weeks. Monsanto is backing House Bill 875 and Senate Bill 425. The “Food Safety and Modernization Act of 2009″ has nothing to do with food safety, it is dictatorship that will allow NO more heirloom clean seeds but only Monsanto genetically altered seeds that some say are already producing disease in humans.

One of many good ideas that has come out of the White House. So nice having a young family in there….was time to move out “my generation” and get new blood.

Dear Valerie, I’m going to do it I’m inspired to plant more than just flowers this year! I like the White House’s whole property keepers have to dig way down and erect way up a dreaded fence. Yes a fence fortunately not to keep wild people out ( unless I grow some medicinal herb ) just wild animals. Here in the Berkshires the deer, bear, bobcats, moose, geese, squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, fisher cats, beaver, mice, moles, snakes, coyotes, crows, possums, muskrats, foxes, turkeys, racoons, pheasants, ducks, slugs, bugs, horrifying skunks, occasional wolf, and the just sighted Mt. lion all love organic home grown veggies. The animals love them so much they won’t leave any for me and friends. Therefore I’m dreaming up ways to make the fence look lovely. I also love those new hanging tomato plant baskets with I imagine would be great for city friends.

Kathy, you need to get a clue before you start spouting off on issues such as food safety that you clearly dont understand. read this…

JJ–
How arrogant and discourteous to assume to tell someone with an opposing viewpoint to yours that they need to “get a clue” etc. Please don’t tell me what I understand and what I don’t understand. I did you the courtesy of reading your link, below is one for you. Anyone who can think for themselves can google “opposition to HR 814″ or the like and make up their own mind.
