Swine Flu: How to Practice Prevention

posted by hrossi | 1:40pm Monday April 27, 2009

The Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization are both urging basic flu-prevention practices as they try to stop the spread of swine flu. But given that cold and flu season is feeling so two months ago, I thought it would be helpful to review what those practices are.

Wash your hands often, in hot soapy water, and for the amount of time it takes you to sing “Happy Birthday” twice (15-20 seconds).

Get enough sleep.  This means slightly different things to different people, but try to get 8 hours of good rest each night to keep your immune system in top flu-fighting shape.

Keep hydrated with 8-10 8-oz. glasses of water each day to flush toxins from your system and maintain good moisture and mucous production in your sinuses.

Be vigilant of surfaces. This is as much a mindfulness exercise as anything else. Be aware of what public surfaces you touch, when you’ve shaken hands with someone, or when you’re using something like a pen that others have recently used–and don’t touch your face until you’ve had a chance to wash your hands.

Know when to get help. Swine flu can look like regular flu, so don’t feel like you necessarily are infected if you’re exhibiting flu-like symptoms.  But do go to your doctor if you live in an area where there are documented cases, or if your symptoms are severe.

The CDC has a really helpful resource page with information on prevention, treatment, and more.

How are you handling the swine flu scare?

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. As a parent of four young children I can not help myself for being very concerned about this Swine Flu that is going around. I know that years ago, people from the United States had died from this Swine Fllu.
With that thought in mind I have found myself considering homeschooling for the rest of the school year. So many times children go to school and get exposed to different things and this Swine Flu is horrible. It has killed people years ago and it is doing it again.
I was wondering if anyone knew much about http://www.Guardian-Silver.com?I know it does give us some hope of added protection for our children. I am sure if you have small children you would be reading and searching for answers and help. So far what I read at Guardian-Silver.com has given me the most comfort from this Swine Flu. I would like to know what others think about it.

Flu Prevention

It’s amazing how bare basics like these can prevent something so deadly..
Even small things, such as drinking orange juice (and consumption of other products high in Vitamin C) and getting enough sleep help your immune system remain strong enough to fight off the flu.
It’s all about additional awareness. Be mindful of your surroundings, and you should be just fine. It’s not as though the disease is spread any differently than the common flu. If we take care to keep out of potentially dangerous situations (such as surrounding ourselves by people with flu-like symptoms, which I’m sure we all know better than to do), I’m sure swine flu will become nothing more than a distant memory by the end of the year.
