Every year millions reach out to those who seem to have the divine on speed-dial. Over the years I've been to dozens of people who fall under the umbrella term "psychic." Usually I contact these folks when I'm in a time of confusion or pain or need, and feel I've lost the forest for the trees. The idea is not necessarily to know what's going to happen next Tuesday or when I'm going to get married, but rather to re-find the path that feels like the one I was born to follow.
Though some religious traditions, including Christianity and Judaism, advise against seeking prophecy of any kind, I see it as another way to glean wisdom and insight into myself or a situation. It's another tool in my self-healing, spiritually-seeking toolbag that has often helped me move through seemingly immovable situations.
Here are some things you might want to know before going that way yourself.
1) Drop the Word 'Psychic.' The word has become so loaded and debased by psychic hotlines and storefront psychics that it has virtually lost its meaning. Most people who authentically have "sight" call them selves "intuitives" or "spiritual coaches." And this is because , a good intuitive is a guide--rather than just dropping information bombs on you, she will ask plenty of questions and then suggest possibilities you may not have considered, much like a therapist does.
2) Choose Wisely. Also like choosing a therapist, when selecting an intuitive go on referrals from people you trust. I can pretty safely say never call a psychic hotline or go to a $20 storefront tarot reader. There is plenty of room for disreputable characters in the field who can take advantage of your pain, openness, and need for hope--not mention the fact of selling information that isn't instantly verifiable. Make sure you feel comfortable in this person's presence and that what she's saying resonates with you. Like a therapist, the person should be honest about not knowing all, have a loving, compassionate presence, and leave you feeling better when you leave. They will not dole out bits of information and try to "upsell" you for more. The fee will be agreed upon upfront.
I had one session in which I called a medical intuitive, she said a few sentences that were supposed to summarize my situation and then asked if it "rang any bells" for me. I honestly said no, that I felt like she was talking about someone else. She told me that there are some people she just can't read, said she'd refund my money and wished me well. I was shocked and disappointed, but admired her honesty.
3) Don't Expect a Prediction or an Easy Way Out. The best intuitives will always give a caveat that they don't see all. No one can really know what will happen, even those with better-trained deeper vision than the rest of us. If anyone ever tells you an absolute, or what you what you should do, run. True professionals will help you find the truth that's inside you and offer perspective. They will also not be handing you easy answers. Chances are you'll leave the session somewhat sated but also with internal "homework," things to think about and work on that may or may not have occurred to you before. It's not a quick fix--and in fact, the point should be to learn to seek and rely on your intuition and inner wisdom. It also helps to set an intention before entering a session--to identify your most pressing question or issue and how you would like this person to help address it.
4) There Are Many Ways to See. A common question about intuitives is "How are they getting their information?" The answer can vary widely. Some talk to guides or angels, others "channel" certain guides (meaning they kind of "check out" or step aside while an entity speaks through them), others "tune in" to your energy body, some read auras, palms, faces, or the tenor of your voice. Some read minds, others use tools like tarot cards, the I-Ching, or runes. But essentially they are all going to the same source--into the mystery. It's what some call God or gods, or the Universe. It's the spiritual realm that's just out of reach for those of us who aren't trained in or born into the art of deep seeing.
5) Many Have Come Before You. Christianity sees divination as going against the Bible's mandate not to seek "soothsayers," because that would be expressing a lack of faith in God as omnipotent and all-knowing. Yet many other of the world's religions and cultures have woven it into their fiber--Hinduism uses Vedic astrology to match marriage partners; in Chinese culture, an expert is consulted on the most mundane to crucial life matters--from when to get married to where to live. Wanting to know what will happen is not just a result of our modern brains grasping for control and answers; it's been the human condition for millennia, people have been seeking propehcies since Greeks took often long journeys to consult the Oracle at Delphi.

5 other things to know before consulting a psychic:
1) Cold Reading is a system by which simple generic statements can be made to sound incredibly specific to an individual, when really almost all people would believe the statement were true of themselves. It's fun - learn it yourself, I recommend Ian Rowland's 'The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading', but there are many other excellent tomes available on this skill. 5 minutes on Google will enlighten you.
2) There are also books available from Mediums, Tarot-readers, Astrologers, Phrenologers, Palm-readers, Aura-readers and a whole manner of other flavours of psychic where they detail the tricks and techniques psychics use to appear intuitive and perceptive. 'The Psychic Mafia' is a particularly good one, you can read it free online here: http://members.fortunecity.com/misteryo/pm1.html
3) The James Randi Educational Foundation issued an open challenge in 1964 to pay a reward (now standing at $1m in a third party legal account) to anyone able to demonstrate psychic powers. Few have tried, none have even nearly succeeded.
4) If psychic powers do not exist, those making money talking to the spirits of loved ones are profiteering on tragedy, and those offering advice that can directly influence people's lives are grossly irresponsible.
5) Psychic powers - of any kind - do not exist.

Thank you Valerie for bringing a level headed informative article about intuition. I am also grateful that you brought in the fact that the person you went to said she couldn't read you and gave your money back. It is true that noone can read everyone 100% of the time. Most intuitives are lucky if they are able to do so 80% of the time.
There are many reasons for not being able to receive intuitive information, some of which is related to the intuitive and sometimes it is related to the person seeking knowledge. We are not meant to know everything about our lives. Our life is a journey, if we knew all the causes, reasons and endings of every situation, what a boring life we would have. What would we do with ourselves?
As you said a good intuitive is a guide. A guide to help you understand how you got here, clarify the options and assist you in making correct choices.

I find psychic topics fascinating. I believe there is such a thing. I've seen to much not to believe it. I'm not talking about the guides or seeking or tarot cards. Just little things that are weird and unexplainable. The whole thing has fascinated me to the point I wrote a book, fictional, where the characters are pitted against each other due to bigotry (the real moral of the story) - psychics and non psychics - because of differences. Psychic abilities have never been touted as 100 percent accurate. Too many things can change what is or the interpretation of what you're seeing/hearing intuiting. To resoundly say psychics don't exist and that they're just lucky when they get it wrong is too small minded for me.
When a person practices basketball, they sometimes miss, sometimes fail. They get better the more they practice, but even the pros miss. Is it not possible that those who are intune with themselves and the universe may be able to 'read' things better? People all have gifts, just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it can't exist.
My book was written around an adventure, but my feelings against racism and bigotry and sexism in any form are clear to anyone sensitive enough to find it. You want a good sci-fi adventure that extols the psychic gifts instead of demeans it read my book, Rebellion on Piza 7, the URL is my web page. I encourage anyone who needs their minds open to the possibilities of what the mind is capable of to read it, or anyone who already knows and understands. I get tired of people criticizing what they don't understand or want to understand.
Thank you for this article in helping us seperate the wheat from the chaff. There are dishonest salesmen in all walks of life - cars, insurance, real estate, merchandise stores - but does this mean we quit buying cars, insurance, houses, and clothes? No, it means we learn about what the danger signs are and steer clear of the bad ones. So, thanks again for educating those of us looking for answers.

I wanted to thank Beliefnet.com for there work and research on information on intuitive individuals.
I believe we all have an available openness to be aware of our selves and others.
I do not call them "powers" but a sense that we allow are selves to let be known if chosen by our own "will".
People have often come to me to read to them and ask how do you do this?
I reply and say meditation and or prayer does the work.
I am only like an example is a phone to listen and interpret what is shown or heard on what I call "the other side".
Kind of like looking through a water fall, either thick or thin, clear or a bit foggy. All depends on how clear or focused I am and also how comfortable the person who asked feels.
I call it "energy" between one and another with the other side. I also hear a lot of people asking "How do or could I do this"? I reply to them that you have to "will" your self to open up by meditation and or prayer. Start to listen to your self and then out ward to others. Dreams also speak of someone who has passed that come and visit to comfort and remind the living person that they are never really left alone from the past away, but are closer to them in another form such as what I call "energy". Today you may have notice "Orbs" are more popular today than ever before because of how digital cameras have the technology to zoom in and capture the most unusual sitings of them. I feel these "Orbs" are the past away livings and or another sort of Energy that has not even entered in our form of the living. Try and look at your photos and look at them perfect circles that look huge or even small. You may notice there are more than one in them pictures. They move around and have different colors to them as well. Mystery of the unknown is now able to be known because of more and more people coming forward with questioning them selves or others of these intuitive abilities.
