Quotes For a Puppy on Her Big Day

posted by hrossi | 11:18am Monday October 12, 2009

IMG_4280_2.JPGMy puppy-niece Jane (is she not the cutest?!) is having her “lady surgery” today–at 6 months old, she’s being spayed.  There is no question that this is the right thing to do to protect her from cancer as well as from future puppy generations that my sister would not want to or be able to house and care for.

Zillions of dogs go through this surgery every year, as they should.  But still, I’m restless this morning because I’m just a little worried about Jane.  She’s so tiny.  She’s so happy.  She has no idea what’s about to happen.  Poor widdle thing.

Ok, calm down, it’s all good, and Jane will be fine.  Possibly I’m projecting how I might feel if such a procedure were sprung on me.  Or possibly I look at that photo and imagine a thought bubble saying, “Wait, WHAT’s going on?!”

This is all my way of saying that I’ve spent a good deal of this morning clicking around Beliefnet’s wonderful collections of uplifting dog galleries–from how to keep your dog healthy to life lessons from dogs to pet prayers and blessings

But my favorite is this gallery of inspiring quotes about dogs, which includes these beautiful words:

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” –Roger Caras

“My little dog–a heartbeat at my feet.”  –Edith Wharton

“To err is human, to forgive canine.”  –Unknown

So Godspeed to Jane on her big day, and may she be back on her tiny feet again soon soon soon, chomping happily on her Tootsie Pop-shaped squeak toy.  Please share your doggie procedure stories–and pet-worry-survival-tips–in the combox!

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers
Because I lack an engineering degree and don't understand why we can't just stop this thing NOW with a 10-ton wad of gum or giant boulder or massive Q-tip, I'll share more spiritual wisdom from elders. Fresh Morning: Worry Away the Worry
"Worry is a prayer for something you don't want." - Sharon Gannon I love that. The other day someone expressed concern about my excessive worrying habit, and I've been contemplating on it ever since. Doing my best to actually contemplate, rather than worry. I've been on a renewed Gilmore G

How Did You (or a Loved One) Heal from Cancer?
In addition to co-writing this blog and working at Beliefnet full-time, I'm writing a book. It's about how I got through cancer five years ago with a combination of heavy-duty Western meds and all I knew from my personal and journalistic experience of yoga, meditation, non-religious spirituality, an

Hello,
My little pug went thru the same surgery jsut prior to six months of age, without complications.
The evening that she returned home, I felt sad, she was listless, wearing an elizabethan collar, she looked uncomfortable.
The normal sleeping quarters was in a pair of my jeans suspended in a cage, this evening she would be in bed with me.
The next day the collar was removed, no scrathing or chewing in the area ever occurred.
Since that day she is in bed with me every evening, initially under the sheets pushing against my thigh.
Gradually she began to sleep on the comforter between my legs, between 2 and 4 o’clock in the morning she will return to her position under the sheets and against my thigh.
24/7′s togeter have been GREAT.

Prayer to St. Francis
Good St. Francis, you loved all of God’s creatures. To you they were your brothers and sisters. Help us to follow your example of treating every living thing with kindness. Good St. Francis, Patron Saint of Animals, watch over [Jane] and keep my beloved companion safe and healthy. Amen

Thanks, Paul and Kathy! Happy belated birthday to Pengyou, and thank you for the beautiful, touching prayer!
I’m happy to report that Jane came through her surgery very well, and after an extremely groggy first day, she’s wagging and eating and just generally being a nice young lady.
She’s even using the Elizabethan collar to scoop up leaves in the backyard to play with/eat–no no! But that’s a good sign that the thing can probably come off soon.
