Video: Sweat Lodge Survivor Speaks Out

posted by hrossi | 1:30pm Thursday October 22, 2009

Beverly Bunn, a dentist who attended the Angel Valley sweat lodge retreat in which three people  died and multiple others were hospitalized, is speaking out about her ordeal.  The video below, from CNN, is wrenching as Bunn describes the surreal scene, including her attempts to administer CPR to those who were in trouble…and being prevented from doing so by retreat workers.  I’m so glad that the reporter had the decency to say what we are all thinking:  “I’m sorry, Beverly.  I’m so sorry.”

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers

This is from the beautiful, amazing International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers--they each

In addition to co-writing this blog and working at Beliefnet full-time, I'm writing a book. The sweat lodge was not following established procedures handed down by people experienced in holding a “sweat.” There are time limits of staying inside a sweat lodge, you always allow people to leave when then need to and you have experienced help outside for those who are having problems. He was making this an endurance test of pushing yourself beyond what you feel you can do and ignored the safety of those participants. Most likely compounding a problem was the participants had been fasting prior to the “sweat.” Safety was not a factor used by the group running the “sweat.”
