How to Donate to Haiti Relief Organizations

posted by vreiss | 2:37pm Thursday January 14, 2010

Yesterday we did a brief post on how to support survivors in Haiti after the 7.0 earthquake 10 miles from Port Au Prince that killed thousands and affected more than 3 million people. Today we’ve collected more charity links from trusted sources. Some of them are religion-centric (but help everyone) and some are not.  This is an excellent article by Charity Navigator on tips for evaluating which Haiti relief organizations to trust and which not-so-much, plus a list of the highest-rated related organizations.

Please let us know of any other you’d recommend and we’ll check them out and add.

World Vision

Catholic Relief Services

American Jewish World Service

Samaritan’s Purse

Mennonite Central Committee

Waking Up to Your Dreams (by Wendy Schuman)
Are you a frustrated dreamer? I know I am. I often wake up with fragments of scenes echoing in my mind that seem really meaningful--but then I leap out of bed, start my morning routine, and in seconds they're gone. I want to linger in that realm and tap into the guidance and insight rising from a wi

Prayer for the Gulf from the 13 Grandmothers
Because I lack an engineering degree and don't understand why we can't just stop this thing NOW with a 10-ton wad of gum or giant boulder or massive Q-tip, I'll share more spiritual wisdom from elders. This is from the beautiful, amazing International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers--they each

Fresh Morning: Worry Away the Worry
"Worry is a prayer for something you don't want." - Sharon Gannon I love that. The other day someone expressed concern about my excessive worrying habit, and I've been contemplating on it ever since. Doing my best to actually contemplate, rather than worry. I've been on a renewed Gilmore G

How Did You (or a Loved One) Heal from Cancer?
In addition to co-writing this blog and working at Beliefnet full-time, I'm writing a book. It's about how I got through cancer five years ago with a combination of heavy-duty Western meds and all I knew from my personal and journalistic experience of yoga, meditation, non-religious spirituality, an

One way is to text YELE to 501501 and donate $5 to Wyclef Jean’s Haitian charity. A $5 charge will appear on your cell phone bill.

You can also donate to the American Red Cross by texting: 90999HAITI
$10 will be added to your next bill. They raised $5 million in 24 hours for relief, and it is desperately needed. Thank you for blogging about this urgent need.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has a long history (and is 4-star rated by Charity Navigator) of direct relief in Haiti. They are on the ground NOW and will be there after the immediate needs, working on infrastructure and long-term improvements. 100% of donations to UMCOR fund direct relief, as the larger UMC covers administrative costs. Please add UMCOR to your list of Haiti relief organizations seeking donations.

Nothing can be better than helping a fellow human in distress. Even though you may not be able to do something directly to earthquake affected Haitians, you still can help in kind to those who can.
