Toxic Thoughts and the Four Elements

The_Four_Elements_by_NLbroekieNL.jpgToday in my acupuncture session, I had a fascinating conversation about toxic thoughts.  I shared with my acupuncturist my "message dream" in which I heard the phrase "toxic thoughts are water soluble" over and over again.

I told her how that image had turned into something of a mantra for me these past couple of weeks.  We human beings are essentially made of water, and I've been visualizing clear, clean water flowing through my veins...dissolving any toxicity that might find its way in via bad food, negative thinking, polluted air, and more.  Water, purifying, cleansing water.

She then shared how she imagines toxicity--as wind.  She visualizes herself as a screen door, able to feel the toxic wind and live with it, but just watching it blow through her, unable to stick or hold onto her body or mind.

Wow - between the two of us, we hit on two of the four essential elements.  I thought I'd give the other two a try.

Fire seems like a gimme, right?  Like those little pieces of flint-y paper that burst into a spark-flame and incinerate?  In the purifying fire of a clear mind, toxic things will simply consume and be gone.

Earth is a little more tricky, because it conjures an image of being buried - not something we want to do with toxic thoughts.  But here's my attempt--think about dirt as the rich, fertile remains of something that was rotten and dying (like the contents of a compost pile, aka leftover salad from last week).  Imagine toxic things crumbling into clean, dark earth, ready to receive the seeds of something new and alive.

Which element are you drawn to?

So Fear and Laughter Walk Into a Bar...

futuramaGallows humor, dark comedy--created for very good reasons. Something along the lines of "If I don't laugh, I'm going to cry." And because funny is hidden in the deepest crevices of grief and suffering sometimes. And in the nooks of stress and general despair. It's a way of distancing ourselves from the bad feelings that threaten to consume us, covering up insecurities, bringing light and perception into the shadows.

Today I'm trying to laugh because I am steeped in fear. I've got my bi-annual oncology checkup in a few hours and I can't think, can't really speak too well, and am just barely functioning (also, I've had a hell of a crazy week--my shrink looked at me today and said, "Wow, you're still standing."). And really, fear sucks. It's cold, it's depleting, it's contracting, it brings our energy down, causes our insides to squirt danger juice (cortisol), slows down our immune system, actually takes out brain cells. It's just a total buzzkill.

So when I came across this quote today, it was such a delicious, chain-shaking relief to spontaneously laugh, hard--fear's ultimate antidote:

"We're in the middle of nowhere, which is the safest part of nowhere." - Futurama (the Matt Groening show).

I feel like it's still making my organs laugh it connects so deeply with the kind of fear I'm in.  Like, nowhere! Ha! Middle of it! Safest! That's the thing with darkish humor (even in its lightest form), you kind of have to be there (read: freaking out) to get it. But anyway, that's all I got.

Have you gotten through a tough time with dark humor?

Indoor Tent Creative Fairy Magic

tentmagic.jpgWhen my stressy brain saw this, it just about dropped its ball o struggle. On a blog I love, ColorMeKatie, photographer Katie Sokoler created a tent in her apartment. Because she felt like it. I love that idea. A contained, cozy beautiful hideaway within a hideaway. I'd pile in fluffy pillows, a good book, markers, paper, and some music source.

What would your ideal cozy tent contain?

'You're Perfect, Now Change'

Blue Heart"The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them."

- Thomas Merton

Yes, yes, yes! Love. Totally agree. Though I wish instead of "twist" he had said "bend." And that first sentence is kind of long, no? Maybe he should have added something about how we first need to accept and love ourselves.

See? It's really easy to concur and incredibly hard to do. To let a beloved, friend, lover, parent, sibling, etc. simply BE.

And yet, it's what we usually crave most. To be loved exactly as we are. (See Exhibit A: Bridget Jones's Diary, "He said he likes me exactly as I am." Her friends marvel: "Exactly as you are?" Her, awed. "Exactly as I am." Exhibit B: A Broadway show called, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change.")

As the second part of that quote--that if we haven't accepted someone we're not truly loving, just experiencing our projected glory--that's the hardest to take. For me, for example, there was once someone I almost loved after dating a really brief moment. And I got hooked, a little kooky in my head, just staying sad, sad, sad long after it ended. But I'm pretty sure a big piece of that sadness is because being with him revived a part of me I thought might be gone, baby, gone. She was alive and vivacious and loving and hot--all things I am in my best moments. With him, those moments were magnified because I felt truly seen. And it quenched a deep, potent longing to feel my essence known.

Problem being: I fell in love with her. Me. The awesome, non-cranky, non-moody, organized, fully on top of it Me. And him, he was awesome, lovely, cool--what I knew of him. I didn't know him well enough to love him, certainly not to spend a year obsessing and sad about him.

I'm not alone in loving someone for how he makes me feel, what he brings out and makes visible. It's certainly not all bad. It's lovely when we can do that for each other. But it's a sticky wicket because when the steady supply of acknowledgement and positive mirroring runs out or pauses--and it will--then the love seems to go away.

Anyway, my point? I really like that quote. It reminds me to own my power, love myself, so I'm strong enough to truly see and love someone else exactly as he is. And that's a helpful skill for every relationship--friend, family, beloved--in our lives.

Can you relate?

Power Animals, Big Bird, and Healing

I love Holly's post about her Chi-Patronus. I love the idea that we have spirit protectors from the natural world. There are two kinds, I think--external and internal. There's the Native American or shamanic idea of a Power Animal--that...

Chi Energy: What's Your Patronus?

Remember the "Patronus" spell, which takes a different form depending on the person who casts it in the Harry Potter books and movies (Harry's is a stag, Hermione's an otter, etc)?  That's how I've been thinking about what it feels...

Brain Break: Music From Sand

It's 3:30 and my brain is soggy, but I was greatly boosted by this video of a guy who made a whole song by recording and mapping the harmonic tones of sand. As cool as it sounds. And relaxing too. Diego...

How to Define Spirituality

I'm afraid Gus at A Pagan' Blog mistook my thoughts on his "spirituality and buying local" for criticism.  Quite the contrary, I was admiring and agreeing with his insight on spiritual connection coming from the world around us - not...

Elizabeth Gilbert on the Divine Creative Spark

Wow, just wow. I have shivers and almost-tears after watching this video talk from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the wonderful memoir "Eat, Pray, Love," about anguish and creativity. "We have accepted this notion that creativity and suffering are inextricably intertwined,"...

Wise Abe's Words of Wisdom

An unbelievably gifted orator, there's a reason Abraham Lincoln is oft quoted. We wish the deeply spiritual--but not religious--man a happy 200th birthday today. Last week some editors at Beliefnet put together some of his pithiest quotes--check them out here....

The iPod Shuffle Oracle Game

One thing flying around Facebook right now is what I'm calling the iPod Shuffle Oracle Game. Basically you take your MP3 player or iTunes, set it to shuffle songs, ask a question, and hit "play." It's actually hugely fun and...

Color Healing with the Medicine Buddha

I'm usually in one of three colors: pink, purple, or black--or some combo thereof. I try to fight it to avoid being the crazy lady who only wears three colors, but alas, the reds and the oranges and the greens...

Cancer-free-a-versary & a Chemo Cocktail Recipe

Today is my 4th Cancer-free-aversary. When I was 31 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Went through being sick, biopsy surgery, chemo, hair loss, temporary early menopause, a year of fatigue, the works. So it is with great pleasure that I...

A Singing Bowl Discovery

Wow, Valerie, wow!  I loved your entry about Tibetan singing bowls  because first of all, I'm glad you're finally on the mend after that nasty bronchitis, and second of all, it turns out I have a singing bowl sitting in...

The Hunt for Non-Awful Natural Hair Products

I call them the Crazy Curls. The ones that shoot out of my bun/ponytail (bunnytail?) like electrified corkscrews. Nothing seems to tamp them short of professional help in the form of hairstylist, turbo heat, and a straightening iron built to...
