Romney pays Mormon magazine to reach its readers

posted by dgilgoff | 1:22pm Wednesday September 12, 2007

With the avalanche of stories about Romney’s so-called Mormon problem, God-o-Meter almost forgot that being an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also has benefits for White House aspirants. After all, Romney has raised more money in Utah than in any other state besides California. And, The Salt Lake Tribune reports, the campaign believes there’s plenty more where that came from. In what the Tribune says “may mark the most overt attempt by Romney to seek financial support from members of his religion,” Romney has paid LDS Living magazine to send a fundraising pitch to its readers. A Romney flak coyly attributed his strong Utah support to the fact that “it was the location for one of his greatest accomplishments, having turned the Salt Lake City Olympic Games of 2002 into a magnificent success,” but that just makes God-o-Meter wonder: how worried is the campaign that more stories about Romney’s Mormon-based fundraising will exacerbate his “Mormon problem?”

On The Religious Left, Great Expectations
The first priorities for Barack Obama's administration will be the economy and a variety of foreign policy issues. But the burgeoning religious left, which worked so hard to get Obama elected, expects some movement on its issues, including a robust White House office of faith-based initiatives, pove

Howard Dean's Vindication
God-o-Meter wrote a piece for today's Roll Call on the vindication of Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's much-derided 50-State Strategy, which is largely about reaching out to the nation's more religious voters in the red states: Years before Barack Obama showed that a liberal Demo

More Innacurate Faith Storylines From the Media
God-o-Meter is struck by the number of faith-based storylines the news media appear to have gotten dead wrong this year. Does McCain court the Baptist? No one else seems to stand strong for any one particular religion….Romney stands out because he is a Mormon! Why is that? There is still a lot of religious persecution present in Christianity, especially among the Evangelicals who claim Mormons are not Christians!
What is a Christian? Look at the accomplishments of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and you will see they have been one of the first on site when natural disasters have struck….Katrina; Indonesia; and other areas of the world! Food; clothing and medical supplies given; vast numbers of volunteers have traveled many miles to assist in clean-up and re-building! Look at the organization and see how it is they are so able to accomplish what they do!
If anyone doubts what I have said, call on Dr. Laura to tell you about the humanitarian services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! She will tell you how they rescued her Christmas project.
Mormons are Christians in a very real sense….and the evidence is found in the works that they do in aiding people around the world, outside of their own faith! They know how to get the job accomplished, and can call on it’s membership in any given situation to help, and the response is outstanding!
I would hope that those who have been benefactors of the LDS humanitarian aid, would step forward and share their experiences. Homes have been rebuilt; restored; food and clothing given freely.
How is it the “Mormons” are able to do this? They pay a Fast Offering each month, as well as 10% Tithing on their income, monies which are used to aid the needy; to build chapels; Temples; schools; and Universities…….they are an industrious people; an honest people generally; and stand for truth and righteousness in all things and in all places….even when it is not “politically correct” to do so!
http://www.lds.org can provide anyone with information regarding our programs in the Church; our doctrines; our history……
