Novak: Huckabee a ‘False Conservative’

posted by dgilgoff | 12:30pm Monday November 26, 2007

huckabeebass.jpgBeating up on Mike Huckabee for his tax and spending ways, conservative columnist Robert Novak says what God-o-Meter has been thinking for some time: Huckabee is emblematic of a new evangelical politics that doesn’t square with the Republican orthodoxy as well as it used to.
Here’s the key graph:

The rise of evangelical Christians as the motive force that blasted the GOP out of minority status during the past generation always contained an inherent danger if these new Republican acolytes supported not merely a conventional conservative but one of their own. That has happened now with Huckabee, a former Baptist minister educated at Ouachita Baptist University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The danger is a serious contender for the nomination who passes the litmus test of social conservatives on abortion, gay marriage and gun control but is far removed from the conservative-libertarian model of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.

God-o-Meter would like to point out that conservative evangelicals were never libertarian in their support for government regulation of abortion and marriage. But what appears to be growing evangelical support for government involvement in health care, education, and the environment–cornerstones of Huckabee’s populist platform–means that the movement’s pro-government ways are creating opportunities for Democratic-evangelical partnerships–and causing small government Republicans like Novak plenty of heartburn.

On The Religious Left, Great Expectations
The first priorities for Barack Obama's administration will be the economy and a variety of foreign policy issues. But the burgeoning religious left, which worked so hard to get Obama elected, expects some movement on its issues, including a robust White House office of faith-based initiatives, pove

Howard Dean's Vindication
God-o-Meter wrote a piece for today's Roll Call on the vindication of Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's much-derided 50-State Strategy, which is largely about reaching out to the nation's more religious voters in the red states: Years before Barack Obama showed that a liberal Demo

A Post-Election Chat with Ralph Reed
Amid today's talk that Barack Obama has narrowed the God Gap, God-o-Meter checked in with Ralph Reed, who spearheaded religious outreach for George W. More Innacurate Faith Storylines From the Media
God-o-Meter is struck by the number of faith-based storylines the news media appear to have gotten dead wrong this year. There are plenty of us Reagan conservatives who feel Novak’s pain :-) I don’t believe that the federal government is the solution for any problem except for defense.

I would hope that anyone not wanting Rudy, a pro-choice and socially liberal candidate, to win the presidency of the United States would realize that a vote for Huckabee is a vote for Rudy. Huckabee has no chance of winning the Republican nomination, and so any vote for Huckabee will help Rudy’s chances of winning the nomination. Look what happened to Pat Robertson? He won the nomination in Iowa but went nowhere after that. Let’s not make this same mistake again!

Let’s see – the most conservative true Republican running , who is a Christian, but does not talk incessantly about it, is Ron Paul.
He, unlike Huckabee, has a very good grasp of foreign policy.
Would someone please ask former tv evangelist Huckabee what Jesus would do about our situation in Iraq ?
