Obama Backers Holding ‘Days of Service’ for Pope Visit

posted by dgilgoff | 10:11am Thursday April 17, 2008

pope4.jpgGod-o-Meter got word last night from an Obama campaign source that it’s helping organize “days of service” for Obama supporters in Washington and New York to coincide with the pope’s U.S. visit. Spearheaded by Catholic Obama supporters and including projects like volunteering in soup kitchens, the initiative is expected to draw a few dozen supporters in each city, and comes at a time when Obama is struggling to peel off Catholic support from Hillary Clinton.

On The Religious Left, Great Expectations
The first priorities for Barack Obama's administration will be the economy and a variety of foreign policy issues. But the burgeoning religious left, which worked so hard to get Obama elected, expects some movement on its issues, including a robust White House office of faith-based initiatives, pove

Howard Dean's Vindication
God-o-Meter wrote a piece for today's Roll Call on the vindication of Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's much-derided 50-State Strategy, which is largely about reaching out to the nation's more religious voters in the red states: Years before Barack Obama showed that a liberal Demo

A Post-Election Chat with Ralph Reed
Amid today's talk that Barack Obama has narrowed the God Gap, God-o-Meter checked in with Ralph Reed, who spearheaded religious outreach for George W. More Innacurate Faith Storylines From the Media
God-o-Meter is struck by the number of faith-based storylines the news media appear to have gotten dead wrong this year. Sounds like about the number of votes he may get over the scheme as well.

As a volunteer, organizer, and participant in the service day in NYC, let me clarify that our efforts do not just happen to coincide with Pope Benedict XVI’s visit, rather, our efforts are intentionally meant as a gesture of welcome FOR Pope Benedict XVI. Acting from our shared faith, Catholic Obama supporters are gathering together to honor the Pope and his message of hope and love. We offer a day of service in his name, and pray that our yearning for the “hope that inspires us to work for an ever more just and fraternal society” will call others to do the same. (Quote taken from Pope Benedict XVI’s White House speech yesterday!)

As part of the community of people inspired by both Senator Obama’s and the Holy Father’s call to a more hopeful vision of what our country, and our world, can look like, I’d like to think that it’s still possible to believe that small groups of people can be driven by higher ideals and genuine intentions. Part of this movement is about fighting against the cynicism of our current politics and believing that we all have a role to play in bringing about the kind of positive change that we seek.

Clinton is peeling support off of herself by joining ranks with McClain in slamming Obama. Obama is reeling in the undecided voters of all walks of life. There are just more Catholics in Penn. available to grab up. It’s a pity because I like Clinton and think she would ,make a good leader for our country, but she is showing her “dark side” in these attempts to hurt Obama. My advise to her is to knock it off and concentrate on how to defeat McClain.
