Though he vigorously opposed John McCain during the primary, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is backing him today in his Philadelphia Inquirer column:
I’ve disagreed with him on immigration, global warming and federal protection of marriage. I’ve taken strong exception to his view that the federal government should fund embryonic stem-cell research. But disagreement on such issues is one of the reasons we have presidential primaries – so each party’s voters can sort out the issues and personalities and choose the candidate who best reflects their collective view. Republicans have done that. Now the question for conservatives is whether McCain fits the Reagan Axiom that someone you agree with on 80 percent of the issues is your friend, not your enemy.
Santorum had less kind words for McCain a couple months ago:
[O]n social conservative issues, you point to me one time John McCain ever took the floor of the United States Senate to talk about a social conservative issue. It never happened. I mean, this is a guy who says he believes in these things, but I can tell you, inside the room, when we were in these meetings, there was nobody who fought harder not to have these votes before the United States Senate on some of the most important social conservative issues, whether it’s marriage or abortion or the like. He always fought against us to even bring them up, because he was uncomfortable voting for them. So I mean, this is just not a guy I think in the end that washes with the mainstream of the Republican Party.
Won’t a lot of Christian Right activists who aren’t inside-the-beltway types like Santorum have a more difficult time doing a complete 180 on McCain?

With the alternative being an Obama administration finding excuses to throw them in jail and take away their children? No, they’ll have no trouble voting for McCain.

Um, aren’t children being taken away from their parents (in droves) NOW somewhere in Texas???
And this Santorum guy, isn’t he the one that, er, barked about “man on dog” sex during the Freat Homosexual Scare not so long ago? As if he would be trusted/believed about anything anymore.
