Evidence that Evangelicals Aren't Budging

Categories: Barack Obama

evangelicals.jpgWhat if the Democratic nominee for president waged an historic campaign for evangelical votes, the Republican nominee was surprisingly tone deaf to evangelical political concerns, a pile of polls showed evangelicals were less beholden to Republicans and their issues than they were at any point in the Bush administration--and evangelicals still supported the Republican nominee by huge margins in November. Spiritual Politics' Mark Silk points to a new Rasmussen poll suggesting such an eventuality:

Obama leads 59% to 35% among those who rarely, never, or occasionally attend Church or other religious services. Among those who attend services at least a couple of times a month, McCain leads 56% to 37%. McCain leads 69% to 28% among Evangelical Christians.

What would happen to all the Democrats' new evangelical outreach programs if such a lopsided result comes to pass?

Well, it makes sense if you consider that the Evangelicals have a choice between someone who may at least pay lip service to them while practically ignoring them and someone who will simply ignore them when in office.

The God-o-Meter (pronounced Gah-DOM-meter) scientifically measures factors such as rate of God-talk, effectiveness—saying God wants a capital gains tax cut doesn't guarantee a high rating—and other top-secret criteria (Actually, the adjustment criteria are here). Click a candidate's head to get his or her latest God-o-Meter reading and blog post. And check back often. With so much happening on the campaign trail, God-o-Meter is constantly recalibrating!
