A True Christian for Veep

posted by dgilgoff | 10:37pm Monday June 2, 2008

whitehouse.jpgA pretty prominent religious conservative has started an online petition for the presidential candidates (read: John McCain) to select “a true Christian VP”–someone who has been “spiritually transformed by Jesus Christ (i.e. regenerated or born again).” The effort is being led by Gary Cass, who led Christian Right legend D. James Kennedy’s Center for Reclaiming for Christ. Its advisory committee includes such powerful evangelical activists as Phil Burress, who led the drive for a state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Ohio in 2004 and who, in the process, might have delivered the White House to George W. Bush. The committee also includes Steve Baldwin, executive director of a powerful coalition of social conservative leaders called the Council on National Policy. Thanks to David Brody for the tip.

On The Religious Left, Great Expectations
The first priorities for Barack Obama's administration will be the economy and a variety of foreign policy issues. But the burgeoning religious left, which worked so hard to get Obama elected, expects some movement on its issues, including a robust White House office of faith-based initiatives, pove

Howard Dean's Vindication
God-o-Meter wrote a piece for today's Roll Call on the vindication of Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's much-derided 50-State Strategy, which is largely about reaching out to the nation's more religious voters in the red states: Years before Barack Obama showed that a liberal Demo

A Post-Election Chat with Ralph Reed
Amid today's talk that Barack Obama has narrowed the God Gap, God-o-Meter checked in with Ralph Reed, who spearheaded religious outreach for George W. More Innacurate Faith Storylines From the Media
God-o-Meter is struck by the number of faith-based storylines the news media appear to have gotten dead wrong this year. One was the line that Obama was poised to make big gains among white votes, especially evangelicals, who were undergoing a generational shift in their political thinking and reexa

And by whose standard is this “True Christian” to be selected? All of these conservatives who are insisting on making decisions for other people remind me of Lucy from “Peanuts”. When someone asks who will decide a question of opinion, she shouts “I WILL”. Also the conservative insistants all seem fairly crabby (a very Lucy trait), and willing to bludgeon non-believers into submission (as Lucy threastens Linus over his role in the Christimas pagaent.
So to all you Lucy’s out there. I give you Snoopy doing his Happy Dance, simply to aggravate you all the more.

I’d rather McCain choose someone who knows the difference between what is real and what is not real.

The last thing we need in public office is anyone who cares what a “true Christian” even is.

Used to be a time in America when there was to be “no religious test to hold public office”.
No wonder no one trusts “Christians” anymore.
