The problem McCain has is similar to what Mondale had in 1984 when the AFL-CIO endorsement cost him two votes for every vote it brought in. The Evangelical leadership may cost McCain as many as three votes for every vote it brings. It is not a winning position for him to be too friendly with that wing of the party.
