Bob Casey Jr’s Abortion Line

posted by dgilgoff | 11:33am Wednesday August 27, 2008

Bob Casey Jr. didn’t devote much of his primetime convention speech last night to abortion (he told God-o-Meter as much before taking the stage) but he did mention it:

Barack Obama and I have an honest disagreement on the issue of abortion. But the fact that I’m speaking here tonight is testament to Barack’s ability to show respect for the views of people who may disagree with him.I know Barack Obama. And I believe that as president, he’ll pursue the common good by seeking common ground, rather than trying to divide us. We are strongest when we are together. And there has never been a more important time to devote ourselves to common purpose.

Those lines echo the recent innovation in the Democratic platform’s abortion language: a subtle shift toward welcoming pro-lifers into the party, at least rhetorically. Will these baby steps add up in the eyes of voters who oppose unlimited access to abortion? Here’s video:7

On The Religious Left, Great Expectations
The first priorities for Barack Obama's administration will be the economy and a variety of foreign policy issues. But the burgeoning religious left, which worked so hard to get Obama elected, expects some movement on its issues, including a robust White House office of faith-based initiatives, pove

Howard Dean's Vindication
God-o-Meter wrote a piece for today's Roll Call on the vindication of Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean's much-derided 50-State Strategy, which is largely about reaching out to the nation's more religious voters in the red states: Years before Barack Obama showed that a liberal Demo

More Innacurate Faith Storylines From the Media
God-o-Meter is struck by the number of faith-based storylines the news media appear to have gotten dead wrong this year. I am a pro-life Democrat and I will support Obama because of everything else he stands for. And I don’t trust John McCain to be concerned for the welfare of any Americans other than the very rich and powerful

Obama has lost this Democratic vote because of his active, extreme support for abortion. He can’t talk his faith in Christ to me while endorsing the taking of human life to the count of 1.3 million unborn children a year. As President, he would have the power to begin to do something about that tragedy. He proposes to prolong this national tragedy.

Actually, Jim, if you listened with an open mind to BO’s answers to Rev. Warren he stated that his goal was to reduce the number of abortions performed. I agree with his position. You cannot convince me that “life” begins at conception and a woman does not have the right to determine whether to terminate a pregnancy, and vica versa. Returning to pre-1973 and making abortion illegal will not solve your concerns. It will merely drive the problem underground and endanger two “lives” (the woman and the fetus you seek to have carried to term). Accordingly, we, as fellow American citizens, should refrain from the rhetorical ad hominem attacks that are all too common today and try to find solutions for the reasons women seek abortions. It is a shame that your inability to look beyond one issue is going to drive you to either not vote, or vote for a candidate that professes to be “pro-life” based upon his position on abortion, but is actually “anti-life” based upon his position on the death penalty and unwarranted, unprovoked preemptive warfare.
