Focus on the Family Action: Blaming Young Christians for Obama Win

At Christianiy Today's politics blog, Sarah Pulliam points out that the 16-page letter from Focus on the Family offering a hypothetical look back on the first term of an Obama administration that's disastrous for religious conservatives blames young evangelicals for...

I am an evangelical and the first in my family to defect from the religious right. The repeated illogical argument that Obama is anti-God does nothing to persuade an younger, informed evangelical. The more my friends and family throw falsehoods and anecdotes at me, the more persuaded I am to keep walking. I am an evangelical, and I am voting Obama.

Number one - "Obama administration that's disastrous for religious conservatives " - There is nothing on this great earth that can harm my faith in God. Nothing any politician can do will be any worse than what the bible already promises will happen to true believers.

Number two - Obama represents Christian beliefs in a way that McCain is not able to understand. From what I can tell, Obama encompasses the spirit of Christ in everything that he does (he isn't perfect of course). Obama's sense of fairness and pragmatism are refreshing and I pray daily for his success and increased wisdom in God. I am a life-long Christian and I consider my self deeply religious. I will be Voting for Obama because I sense that he is motivated by real love for God, family, community, and his country.

How can groups like this purport to be Christian and yet violate the Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness? Their bigotry blinds them to their own sinfulness. Fortunately for them God is forgiving; their followers should be less so.

Dobson's blind hatred of the 'other', and his vile, viscious lies about God's gay and lesbian children is what is driving younger and (as LM mentioned above) "informed evangelical[s]" out of the Republican column. Dobson's actions and his organization and his beliefs are totally antithetical to Christ's message.

As a Christian, I'm sadden by all of the "hate" I hear on Christian radio, and read on Christian sites and publications. Groups like Focus on the Family and other Christian leaders using their platforms to disseminate hate is the only true sign the fall of this great nation - - Using the banner of Christian, Christ Like, to spread fear and hatred. Heaven help us all.

I agree most heartily with everything posted here. I wanted to email Dobson directly through his Family Action site, but interestingly enough, there was *no way* to contact them...can't say I'm really surprised.

My husband and I are both long time believers who have also defected from the religious right...we have been campaigning for Obama and just cast our votes for him. We started drifting away from the Republican party about five years ago, as they no longer demonstrated the love and compassion I believe Jesus wants us to show towards others. This letter from the Family Action group is just the worst case of fear mongering, rumor spreading, and frankly...hate. If they are Christians, what are they so afraid of? God says that He has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7).

It is clear from the letter that they haven't even listened to Obama...he has declared in no uncertain terms that he is not for gay marriage, that he's not against the second amendment, and that he is a Bible believing Christian.

It seems that well known Christian groups, like Focus on the Family should be doing their best right now to help *unite* people and tone down all the rhetoric and hate circulating around in these last days before the election. Instead they are fueling it. We have had enough fear in this country...we need hope...and while our ultimate hope should be in God, I will take all the hope I can get right now, especially in the form of a President ;)

Let me begin by saying that I really respect Dr. Dobson and all of his work over the years in providing Biblical guidance for family life. It is for that very reason that I was so much in line with his inititial take on this election. Both candidates are imperfect and leave much to be desired. In retrospect, many of us has grown to feel the same about our current President.

I too contacted Focus Action (twice) to express my concern with the level of blind partisanship reflected in recent communications. I believe that Dobson was closer to right back in Feb 2008, when he stated that he would not be able to vote for the first time in his life. That to me was a better response. For good reasons he indicated that he could not support a McCain presidency (immoral personal life, soft on family issues and life issues). Since that time, I have spent alot of energy trying to get to the detail behind that position. It was crystal clear during McCain's run against Bush. Other details that came to the surface are items like McCain's gambling habit and close ties to the gaming industry (lead player in the Indian Reserve Casino legislation). In addition, a good portion of his family wealth comes from the Anneheiser-Bush company, where his wife is the Chairwoman, son form first marriage is an executive and Mccain severed in a leadership role.

It is quiet clear that Focus has chosen not to focus on these issues, which account for arguably a far greater degree of moral decay in our society (how many abortions start as uninhibited nights drinking in casinos). Aside from that drunken driving, gambling addictions, casino's are often associated with the adult entertainment and prostitution industry. McCain gets a pass because he figured out the right combination of big moral issues (as if God assigns greater weight to one or the other).

Matthew 23 - 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

THE SAME "hypocrites", JUST A DIFFERENT GENERATION !!!!!!!!

Barak Obama is a TRUE Christian; working for the poor & caring for the masses - He is more like Christ than all the rest put together. God Bless the Youth who are not yet tainted by greed and self-indulgence - IMHO

According to 2 Tim 2:23-25 (NLT) "Again I say, don't get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. The Lord's servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They must be able to TEACH EFFECTIVELY and be patient with difficult people. They should GENTLY teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will believe the truth."

I am glad to see the gentle responses and hope in the messages of disagreement in these comments. I hope others will pray for the hearers of the accusatory and harsh message of released by Focus on the Family. I pray it will not turn people away from God or God's will. God works through love not through hate or condemnation! Nor are God's people future/fortune tellers. God is fully in control no matter what the outcome of the election. Finally, we all stumble and God, through Christ, provides forgiveness for all of our short falls. We can and ought to test the words, and the works, of man against the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to direct us in Truth. I pray that TRUTH will be revealed, and those ensnared by lies will escape through HIS FORGIVNESS! In HIS NAME!

I am totally shocked by Focus on the family and Dr. James Dobsons vicious attacks on Mr. Obama, it almost makes me ashamed to be a Christian. If they prayed for rain" of Biblical proportions" on his appearance, what other terrible things have they prayed for to happen. Remember, Dr. Dobson, "if you live by the sword, you shall perish by the sword" the American way is a two party system, thats what makes our country great, if you don't agree with a mans policys, vote for the other candidate. I'll bet Sara Palin, thinks what they did was"cute"

It is the level of both discourse and intelligence that one expects from Dobson. Maybe he should just content himself with getting upset over cartoons.

I would think it would be entertaining to lock Jesse Jackson and him in a room and let them lament to each other on how no one pays any attention to them any more.

Paul, seeking wisdom
October 25, 2008 12:16 PM

Dr. Dobson doesn't follow the advise of Paul in Colossians 4:5,6 "Walk in wisdom toward others, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person."

When we are blinded by our convictions, we fail to see the good in others. While John McCain is a good man, his past and his temperament dictate how he will be as a president. Just as Obama's past and temperament will dictate how he will serve the office.

Both have good points and bad. The question is: Who is the
best for the country at this juncture in time? Who can revive the Nation? Who is best suited to repair the damage of the last eight years of war and disreguard for Americanand Human Rights? The answer my friend is clear, it is not someome who beleives that we can play God with the world.

The more I see of Obama and actually learn about him I really have no fear of him. I am a 58 year old who has been ACTIVE in my faith since I was 16. I have attended a variety of churches over my lifetime, visiting to see what other churches do differently and even wen to Catholic school a couple of years. It would appear that Obama's faith is pretty sound.

We need to keep in mind that no candidate will ever be without fault or sin. I don't think you can measure the breaking of one commandment against the other. Lies, deception, disrespect of any of Gods people, destroy our own relationship with God.

Issues such as R v Wade have been political fodder as long as I can remember and what politician has ever substantially changed it ? I suspect that the only change that will ever happen is when the moral compass of the world, THE CHURCH, gets its act together, get out of politics which are inherently corrupt, gets back into the love of Christ ministers to Gods people where in a world community of faith and love demonstrated by acts of love we can correct some of these issues. Obama is right on his view of the role of the parent, beyond that the church is to be the parent. It is not our role to legislate to the non believers, it is our role to win them over.

So let us minister to the people and to the problems of our society. It is in my mind equally dangerous to be on the "right" side of religion which I have always perceived as self righteous as on the "left" side which I have always perceived as dismissing of Gods expectations - both extremes want to tell God what He thinks and tell the rest of us what He thinks, Both are self serving not Christ serving.

Whomever is elected president should not effect in any way the mission of the body of the church, to love as Christ loved. Whenever we have to pick up a gun and go to war, any war we should always remember it is a representation of our failure as Christians to fulfill our mission to all of Gods people.

"prayed for rain" of Biblical proportions" on his appearance"

Yes, they did, but it didn't happen. Funny, though, that Hurricae Ike happened during the Rethuglican convention. Who said irony is dead?

Just like Jerry Falsewell (who blamed Katrina on gays) - theology by meteorology. Makes about as much sense as Dobson. As Charles Cosimano says above, "It is the level of both discourse and intelligence that one expects from Dobson."

Don't Christians think for themselves anymore?

It warms my heart to see so many here are "New Testament" Christians full of love, caring and forgiveness. It is a stark contrast from the comments and actions of the "Old Testament" Christian behavior of law, war campaigns and judgment. Jesus rebuked many such "Scribes & Pharisees" as outwardly religious, but inside evil & twisted for their own purposes. Some use the teachings to change themselves, while others us it to force change on others - in other words, terrorists by any reasonable standard. I see no difference regardless of what faith they proclaim, the fruit they bear is the same.

I praise God for my brothers and sisters who posted before me. I am thankful for the work he has done in your hearts that you can rebuke negative behavior such as has been exhibited by Focus on the Family in their political agenda. Unfortunately, much of the good this organization has done is being severely tainted by this unchristian political action. I pray God will lead any unbelievers who have been turned away from him by this horrible behavior to one of you so they can see God's love in you and be led into his arms.

Christians = Republicans? I don't think God would even get a chuckle out of that one.

Christians = Americans? I'm kind of thinking that God might have a problem with that one too.

Christians = War mongers? Uh... definitely not what God had in mind.

Christians = Only what deranged folks like Dobson describe. I kind of believe God's a little bigger than that.

Christians = Only people who need someone else to do their thinking for them? Only certain kinds of people. Only people who vote for a certain political party? Only...what?

So where does that leave us... ?

No wonder so many people are leaving "organized" religion.

My idea of God is that He's a lot bigger than what has been described to me by these small minded people.

I'm voting for GOD IS BIGGER THAN YOU in '08.

I have no doubt in my mind that I will vote for Obama, last two election for GEORGE Bush our Bapist minister stood in the pulpit and said how dangerous it would be if we did not vote for Bush, I guess to many people followed his advise and look where our country is today. Obama to me is everything Bush-McCain is not,he comes across with a Christian attitude and a good family man, I think if he does not win our country will only keep going down hill, and respect for America will keep dropping.

I attend a church that founded this great country and I wonder how these mega-pastors came to have such power...Many of them have slick marketing campaigns, selling anthing from books to socks with their names and mega-churches written on them. When was it decided (Isupposed it was decided by money) that Rick Warren or James Dobson speaks for us...I have a strong family with well-adjusted children and I don't agree with James Dobson and Focus on the Family on many issues .I say enough! I don't know how they can say they believe in the concepts Christ put forward...they are so judgmental and hateful. Don't they understand that peace begins here on the homefront and what creates it is the words we use? I believe in Christ's message and I see it also in Barack Obama, the Biden's and both of their families....Barack Obama's latest ad featuring just him speaks to that...he looks forward and how to start working for good change instead of constantly fighting about what is wrong. I'm voting Barack Obama because he embodies what I believe the Christian path is.....

Focus on the Family are like Pharisees--this letter is a nice work of doomsday fiction, but has little to do with Christian issues or reality. Do they really think that ending warrantless wiretapping will lead to terrorist attacks? Maybe they do, but they don't get that idea from their faith! Do they really think that churches will lose their tax-exempt status if they don't perform gay marriage? My cousin was not permitted to get married in his home church because he lived with his wife before marriage. And the church is still tax-exempt! Churches can refuse to marry anyone they want for any reason.

I think Focus on the Family is discouraged because they see younger Christians rejecting their philosophy. Spanking is not just not widely accepted among my generation of mothers (I'm 33), so we don't embrace the Dobson approach. We don't embrace his scapegoating of homosexuals, either. We are much more comfortable with rejecting the sin while embracing the sinner. I suppose we just know more of them and they are decent people, so we don't hold them responsible for the downfall of Western civilization. If marriage is in trouble in America, it's because of things heterosexuals do, not homosexuals.

We (the younger generation) realize that we live in a diverse society and we are excited by a politician who will bring us together, not drive us apart. Go Obama!

Focus on the Family has enriched my life a number of times, but they have pretty much been losing credibility in my book for a while, and this new "doomsday" scenario should lose them the title of being a "Christian" organization. If they want to be political, it should only be on "family" issues. What does Focus on the Family know about Eastern European politics or terrorism? And what right does it have to go around fearmongering? God is in control, no matter who wins; they should act like it. Beyond as dishonest and fearmongering this latest thing is, even worse is that it just sounds pathetic.
Despite this, however, my vote goes to McCain. With all his gaffes (the Palin pick being the biggest one) and the myriad mistakes of the Republican Party, abortion is still a big deal to me, and I wouldn't give my vote to a pro-choice candidate yet. Nevertheless, I wouldn't have voted for McCain either if Obama had even a "moderately" pro-choice record on the issue. But he has been so radical on the issue that my vote goes to McCain. And I don't buy what any politician says about their personal spirituality anymore. Politicians will say anything to get elected. Remember W on Jesus Christ; how would you grade that remark now?. In light of that, why do people here so easily accept what Obama says? He's a politician; that gives everyone plenty of reason to at least withold judgment. And I don't buy McCain's less pronounced spiritual statements either. But McCain at least has a long pro-life voting record and a long record of bipartisanship; Obama has neither.

How sad for our country. We are becoming a European state, socialist and post Christian. We will rue the day that we elected an ill-prepared, inexperienced, naive, pro muslim candidate. Free health care will mean little if our country is left vulnerable to terror attacks because Barney Frank's pledge to cut the defense budget by 25% becomes an actuality.

Please read the "Freedom of Choice Act " before you cast your vote. Obama has pledged to Planned Parenthood that he will sign the bill as soon as possible. This bill allows for taxpayers' money to be used for funding abortions, allows for partial birth abortion, negates parental notification, and disallows any state restrictions to abortion. Do we want a country that endorses this immortality?

October 29, 2008 5:45 PM

Oh, oh, oh, Conservative Americans are so obsessed with keeping things just as they were in the USA in general five decades ago. I find this nothing short of pathetic. Provincialism seems to abound within their ranks. This is the 21st century and folk are still ranting about pro-choice vs "pro-life", the so-called horror of gay marriage and everybody's fear that an Obama administration will (partially) ban the free range of rifles. Talking about pro-life. Can you imagine Jesus, should he be alive and well today, grab his gun and shoot bears and wolves from a helicopter? Do we ever hear a conservative about the fact that every five seconds (yes, every five seconds) a child is dying somewhere in this horrible world of malnutrition? No, because if they really cared, their cozy 20th century American way of life would probably be at risk. Pro-life? Don't let me laugh. I think the Pharisees would have indeed felt very comfortable here in right wing GOP Middle America.

This country is the ONLY one in the world founded on belief in the God of the bible. Do you think us being the greatest nation EVER is just because we work hard, have determination, or any other silly little phrase we try to clame only for Americans? You want God out of your business? We'll here you go, and now watch what happens to the America we have had for over 200 years. Welcome to change and the NEW AMERICA. "Lord, please come quickly so my children and grandchildren do not have to witness this un-Godly country we are becoming, and the wrath you will bring as judgement. Amen". Be on your knees my young uninformed christian brothers and sisters who voted for "change"! Conservatism has it's problems, but putting the Lord and what His word commands first is rarely one of them!

It's time to dump Dobson. His megalomaniac view of his own importance in the world has done more harm than good. It's high time the Christrian Right got off their collective behinds to stand up for the poor and disenfranchised in this world rather than the greedy big money crowd that brought about our current economic mess.I'm no Democrat but my prayers go with Mr. Obama that he would bring us together as a country. Stop demonizing him and find at least some common ground to begin getting this country back on its feet.

I am in mourning for this nation. Those who would vote for a man who takes lightly and/or ignored God's direct instruction about abortion (shall not murder); partial birth abortion favoring and no medical attention for a human being born as the result of attempted abortion but still living; one who is a friend to those who hate Israel; one who himself is a friend to an unpentant terrorist; one who was a member of a hate preaching church; one who sealed his birth certificate to avoid verification; one who wants to steal from some to give to others. One of our signers of the constitution said if a government is big enough to take your property from you, it is big enough to take your freedoms too. God will not be mocked. This year some Christians mocked God with this election choice, and they will be held accountable for a righteous or an unrighteous vote. Shame.

I just saw a "gay rights" demonstration on the Sundance Channel, with a crowd trying to get inside Dr. Dobson's church. I didn't note the date, so it may have been a re-run. The best part was when polite, but firm, police officers led hand-cuffed trespassers to the pokey. I looked for this site as soon as it was over.

Genesis 2:24 says marriage is a union between one man and one woman. This is in spite of the December 8, 2008 Newsweek trying to refute the Bible & hetero marriage. I wonder if Newsweek will follow the circulation drop that miami Herald, Washington Post, NY & LA Times? One can only hope - and pray.

The same ones who believe in the "living, breathing constitution" must be the same crowd that believe in a "living, breathing, Bible".

This in no way casts any dispersion on "The Living Bible", as I have found it an informative, easily read book, which does _Not_ distort God's Word, but explains it for modern readers.

When we were given the Ten Commandments, I didn't see where we receive a 'pass' for 70 or 90%. As difficult as it may be at times for most of us, we were given TEN to obey.
