Christians who remember their Lord was unjustly and cruelly given the death penalty have a hard time being enthusiastic about imposing the death penalty on others.

I agree completely with Mr. Stassen, I think. Are there any Christians who are “enthusiastic” about the imposition of the death penalty? I know of none in my limited experience. I guess that depends on how one defines the word “enthusiastic”. Are there Christians who believe that the death penalty is permissible in some situations? Yes, undoubtedly. However, my impression is that Sojourners would consider such folks “enthusiastic” supporters of the death penalty. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.>

What decent person, Christian or otherwise supports a cruel and unjust execution? In order to make Stassen’s observation you have to equate the a perfectly innocent Christ with the guilty Richard Allen Davis who kidnapped, raped and strangled Polly Klass. Please don’t do that.>

A different “new testament” argument against the death penalty is Jesus’ interruption of the stoning of the woman caught in adultery. Besides, Jesus is also quoted in the gospels as saying something like, “You have heard it was said “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” BUT I (Jesus) say to you, if someone hits you on one cheek, turn to him the other also…”>

Marco, Its a fair argument, but not very strong if you consider the context of the first case, and who Jesus was address in the second. Advocating the death penalty is not a big issue for me (anymore), so I don’t want to spend time addressing that. But the thoughtless implications of Stassen about Christ really tick me off. I can’t believe somebody supposedly so learned could pop off such a stupid statement. Steve>
