Why I Work for Immigration Reform (by Patty Kupfer)
When I tell people that I work on immigration reform, they usually laugh or say, "way to pick an easy topic." Everyday it feels like there is more fear, more hate. Raids are picking up in Nevada, California, and New York. A number of senators who supported comprehensive reform only a few months ago

Verse of the Day: 'peace to the far and the near'
I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will lead them and repay them with comfort, creating for their mourners the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the Lord; and I will heal them. But the wicked are like the tossing sea that cannot keep still; its waters toss u

Voice of the Day: Donders on Jesus' Approach
Jesus' approach is always fresh, surprising, new, and unexpected. Consequently, it always provoked a direct reaction.... He shattered firmly formed convictions and beliefs. He often used nonreligious language, avoiding the religious language of his contemporaries, a language that had been used so lo

Thanks for going, we looked for you but in spite of the reports to the contrary, there were a lot of us, and small groups were hard to find. I appreciate the fact that Jim Wallis was invited to speak at Davos, but we all need to speak to the corporatists in power here at home.

Speaking of “Peace Rallies”, here’s a blurb from FRC that you might be interested in: FRC has done some digging and uncovered more shocking details about the anti-war march in Washington this past weekend. For such a small crowd, the demonstrators were an interesting bunch of people – everything from actors and anarchists to the members of Congress who marched alongside them, including: Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Reps. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Maxine Waters (D-CA), Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI). Also addressing the crowd from his prison cell was convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal. After talking to members of the Capitol Hill police, FRC discovered that one reason the officers held back from confronting one batch of protestors was because the anarchists threatened the officers with bottles of human urine. Additional damage done to both city and personal property includes a news truck pelted with rocks and spray-painted street signs. Although the demonstrators claimed they supported the troops but not the war, The New York Times reported that some of the protestors actually spat at war veterans as they marched by. Peaceful civil disobedience has an honorable history in the United States, yet many of those who protested last weekend were neither civil nor peaceful. Speaker Pelosi must respond to these actions, even though her party had connections to this shameful march. For a report from the Capitol steps, log on to http://www.frc.org and watch the video featuring FRC Radio’s Washington Correspondent, Bethanie Swendsen. I am not in a position to vouch for or dispute FRC’s claims, just thought they might be of interest. Wolverine

Why do you waste our time writing comments that are not substantiated? If we are interested in the details of this event we go to a site that makes accuracy important

Okay, how’s about this, from The Hill (a perfectly reputable, non-right-wing publication specializing in events in and around the Capitol): Anti-war protesters spray paint Capitol building By Jackie Kucinich Anti-war protesters were allowed to spray paint on part of the west front steps of the United States Capitol building after police were ordered to break their security line by their leadership, two sources told The Hill. According to the sources, police officers were livid when they were told to fall back by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse andDeputy Chief Daniel Nichols. “They were the commanders on the scene,” one source said, who requested anonymity. “It was disgusting.” After police ceded the stairs, located on the lower west front of the Capitol, the building was locked down, the source added. A second source who witnessed the incident said that the police had the crowd stopped at Third Street, but were told to bring the police line in front of the Capitol.Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps and began to spray paint “anarchist symbols” and phrase such as “Our capitol building” and “you can t stop us” around the area, the source said. Morse responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police… I understand your skepticism about the urine, it’s conceivable that FRC fell for a rumour there, but they cite the New York Times on the spitting incidents, and I doubt FRC would make that up. I’m not saying that Sojourners was responsible for all of this, but it appears that the protest got out of hand, and in a protest you are known by actions of the company you keep… Wolverine

sojourners on the map BIG TIME in Los Angeles, as Mayor Villaraigosa appoints Soujourner COO Jeff Carr new “Czar” in charge of gang activity reduction. And there was supposed to be a gathering of a local African American Activst, Ted Hayes, in a City park, after he was issued a permit. But about 500 people showed up first, and police would not move them, to allow the permit holder to have his event/Conduct city business. But the bigger picture is with Sojourner running the mean streets of Los Angeles, and Clinton jumping on the soujourners bandwagon, and Clinton appointing Villaraigosa her Campaign Co-Chair, then a couple weeks after he appoints #2 Sojourner to fight gang violence…and we have a real interesting story on our hands. Check the blog. VERY interesting inside City Hall blog. the city of LA is a reality show, soap opera in itself…maybe you’ve heard…if not, you will…this is certainly gonna make it onto the national radar…
