Frida Berrigan: Gold Star for New Nukes?
At the beginning of March, the National Nuclear Security Administration announced the winner of the so-called "Reliable Replacement Warhead" competition that pitted the nuclear laboratories against each other. Lawrence Livermore won out against its long-time rival Los Alamos. If all goes according to plan, the Berkeley-based lab's design will eventually end up as submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles.Still, NNSA administrator Thomas D'Agostino insisted that the new warhead "is not about starting a new nuclear arms race." Don't get me started on this. It's pathetic that we are wasting more monies to increase an already large nuclear stockpile. Why do we need more? We can already destroy the world repeatedly. I don't understand how this will make us more secure. I really just don't get it. p

From what I have read it is about tuning up old missiles because the old warheads are on thier way to becoming unservicable. It is also a case of Pandora's box. If we don't have them someone else will.
