Verse of the Day: Causing the Cry of the Poor
He strikes them for their wickedness while others look on, because they turned aside from following him, and had no regard for any of his ways, so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him, and he heard the cry of the afflicted—When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him, whether it be a nation or an individual?—so that the godless should not reign, or those who ensnare the people.
- Job 34:26-30

This is quoted out of context if it is intended to support the notion that God cares about the poor. It is a portion of the a speech from Elihu, one of the folks that thought Job deserved what he was getting. Here's the intro.
Job is a rich folk tale. It is very, very important. A significant lesson from it is that sometimes things happen we don't understand, and we much be careful not to bend the world to fit our convention. Elihu was wrong. God had turned on Job. God in fact baited Satan into destroying Job to test Job's faith.
Now, if these quote is presented to challenge us to have an every more complex understanding of our faith, if it is a story like putting the oil on Jesus' feet, if it is meant to say, "Don't be too quick to condemn others as being out of favor with God," then I take it back. It is a good quote.
