Best Debate on Iraq So Far (by Jim Wallis)
One of the best debates I have seen about the events of last week and the future of American policy in Iraq was Sunday’s Meet the Press debate between senators John Kerry and John McCain, two Vietnam veterans who, although friends, maintain profound and passionate disagreements about the war and what policy makes the most sense for American safety and international security.

It was a very good debate. I found myself nodding at comments by both men.
I was a little disappointed by some of the sound byte posturing, and at times I found myself wondering if the roles had been reversed, and a Democrat had gotten us into Iraq, wouldn't I be hearing the same exact arguments from the opposite sides of the aisle?
Despite this though, I sensed that both men were fairly sincere in their beliefs.
I hope we can move this debate forward from here. The outcome of this war (like many of the challenges this country faces) is too important for partisanship.

I love good debates ... but as there are rules of conduct here, it would have been nice if McCain had been truthful. media matters and other columnists have shown that his remarks were not consistent with remarks he made at the Petraus hearing, nor the testimony of Petraus ... this war is wrecking havoc in every way in this country and especially in Iraq (over one million dead Iraqi men, women and especially children), over 7,000 Iraqis now with cholera, malnutrition rates of over 28% in Iraqi children (much higher than under Saddam), lawless mercenary forces (Blackwater) answerable to no one and operating outside our military code of conduct, etc.
For me what the debate didn't talk about is what we Christians have to focus on and speak out against. This is being done in our names.
