Verse of the Day: 'They who trample the head of the poor'
Thus says the Lord: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment; because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals— they who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth, and push the afflicted out of the way...

And here I thought biblical literalism was dying the slow death of attrition as self-declared fundamentalists vanish. Thanks Sojo for providing excellent examples of how to proof-text and read the Scriptures literally. Who knew the concordance entries on "poor," "poverty," "justice," and "hypocrisy" would be the gift that kept giving? Too bad our good Lord never took the time to condemn the apocalyptic evils of conservative christians daring to formulate political beliefs! That would make for a fabulous blog post speaking the truth to the evangelical theocratic-like power!

This quote from Amos appeared on banners here in Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras, in the struggle against open pit mining. In July people blockaded the roads in several places - and, at least here, proceeded with singing hymns and praying. In August the bishop celebrated a Mass for Creation and Life outside the cathedral and a hand-lettered sign bore this text.
The Catholic Church in southwestern Honduras is very involved in the struggle for a new mining law that respects the poor and the environment. The bishop has received threats and calumnies, and has still continued his advocacy. Most recently his car was beaten on by pro-mining interests.
