Verse of the Day: 'Truth stumbles in the public square'

Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands at a distance; for truth stumbles in the public square, and uprightness cannot enter. Truth is lacking, and whoever turns from evil is despoiled. The Lord saw it, and it displeased [God] that there was no justice.

- Isaiah 59:14-15

On my blog I was just wondering how the sermon on the mount's prohibition against lust and hate should play out in a free speech context. Specifically, should Christians be in favor of limits on pornography & hate speech.

In this scripture "truth stumbles in the public square, and uprightness cannot enter," but I wonder what the solution is for members of the society. Is Isaiah calling only for personal truthfulness? Is Isaiah urging public action against untruthfulness? It would seem too convenient to claim that Isaiah was urging some sort of marketplace of ideas. While that is our answer to a public square where truth stumbles, I don't think it would have been Isaiah's.
