Voice of the Day: Compassionate Efforts Toward Justice
Our compassionate efforts toward justice guarantee a deepened faith and prayer life. They will lead us to disciplines of the spirit and of the heart. By engaging with suffering, we learn true joy. By touching despair, we discover what it means to embrace hope. By coming to know Christ crucified, we participate in his resurrection. By pouring ourselves out, we gain our lives.

As a "mainline" Christian who has worked for social justice for 40 years--equality in educational opportunity, support for the poor, family support, recognition of racism--I believe in the humanness of all of us. So I was dismayed several years ago to find that the most virulent of the anti-immigrant people claimed to be "Christians"and "evangelicals" which means that they purport to believe in spreading the good news of the Gospel that is applicaple to everyone (all of God's children). So how do they get validation for their hate messages about people who are escaping NAFTA-created poverty and oppressive governments to seek ways to feed their children? Are people born in other countries not deserving of being human beings protected by the Gospel of Jesus. The inhumanity of these supposedly "Christian" people is bewildering.
