Video: Sojourners Veteran on the Front Lines of L.A. Gang Wars (by Ryan Rodrick Beiler)
Jeff Carr was Sojourners' chief operations officer before taking a post as L.A.'s gang czar (anti-gang czar, that is) last summer. He was featured in this report by CBS News, and I'm sure he would appreciate it if you'd join with the Sojourners team in supporting his difficult work with your prayers. Watch it:

80,000 gang members in L.A. area what an incrediable number/problem. Don't know how long Jeff has been at this post, but he has a terribly tough job ahead of him. Remember this though, there are 80,000 kids there that just want to feel connected, to feel important to someone else, to feel apart of a family. There is hope! doug

It seems like such an insurmountable problem, but I'm glad that you're on the job, Jeff. God bless you every day in your work... we're thinking of you back in DC.

Blessings Jeff.
Such a position is such a "blessing and curse." Governments appoint czars when they have no capacity or strategy. It makes them look like they are responsibly working on something without allocating anything to work on it. They can be fully responsible while being totally irresponsible.
But I think one of the great blessings is that you can help draw boundaries about what everyone can and cannot do. You can't solve the problem by working hard and doing more than is your's to do. Neither can churches. Neither can government. Neither can families. Neither can current gang members. Neither can prisons. Neither can entrepreneurs. Everyone has a job. And that job should be done with an eye towards how families and young people are given safe and meaningful opportunity to create and live out positive dreams for their lives.
