I am confused. We have this gargantuan national debt, and I am always hearing about us giving money/aid/weapons sometimes to both sides who dispute. Whatever your position on these conflicts, who are we to spend to solve these problems while our roads and bridges and fall into further disrepair?

I know Nixon said what an opportunity we had with helping Russia, but you can put a dress and expensive jewelry on a bear and it seems to find its way back to being a hungry bear. I know little about their conflict, but you are certain to find no consensus between their viewpoints. I look forward to someone informing me why, other than fearing everyone joining NATO that this violence took place. The timing with the Olympics, the sheer volume of the action seems to be well planned on Russia's part. Maybe NATO should offer that Russia could join too. A sort of new world order, wouldn't you say? I say this mostly in jest, but is NATO really the problem here? Maybe it is time to rethink what this organization is for if it creating tension rather than peace and security.

RE: Afghanistan - Maybe we should be consider sending Tractors and Farmers over there so that the villagers who are growing opium can grow another crop. Possibly those that produces bio-fuels. It seems that by destroying some farmers only source of income, we incubate and hatch enemies to fight and kill our brave sons and daughters.

Serfer's "jest" isn't that funny. Russia did make overtures about joining NATO some years ago but those overtures were rejected, largely (I undrestand) at US instigation. It is this perceived rejection by the West and consequent fear of encirclement (not helped by the location of much of GW's anti-missile shield) which is encouraging Medvedev and Putin to throw their weight around in their own back-yard. Another spectacular own-goal by the leaders of what used to be known as the Free World!
